stultiloquentia mentioned "Berkeley School classical vs jazz musicians" AU in a comment from yesterday's post and I was like ooooo! A fusion with Our Shining Days! (YouTube link) And when I looked for the movie on YouTube (where I watched it), I realized IT'S ON NETFLIX NOW!

Y'all, if you haven't seen this movie yet, I can't recommend it enough. I've seen it twice and would happily watch it again. It's sweet and happy with, like, minimal-to-zero angst.

I've been holding off on The Untamed because I heard it was GOTS level brutal, and that is really, really not my thing (I stopped halfway through the first GOTS book.) But this may just get me to watch it after all...

I don't know what GOTS is, so can't say how it compares to The Untamed. IMO, there's nothing in The Untamed that isn't present in standard wuxia films. There are some pretty grim themes (genocide, psychological abuse), but it's not, like, Tarantino-levels of visual violence.

Sorry, GOTS=Game of Thrones.

It's not even violence per se, exactly. Like, the first Kingsmen movie was ultra-violent, but it was all comic book violence and didn't really bother me. But the raw cruelty at the end of the first ep of Jessica Jones had me noping out of the rest of the series immediately. So it all depends. Once I finish GYADL (augh) I think I will give it a shot. Between the massive popularity and "fighting with the power of music", I'm definitely interested!

McKitterick watched that, so I saw some of it over his shoulder when I walked the room and imo? it's not similar levels of violence. The violence in GOT (again imo) was played for titillation/prurience. In Untamed, it's either shown as general battle scenes or heartbreaking. Or both. Often both. Bodies (and heads) occasionally hang from rafters in display, but they're there for a reason other than to thrill/shock the audience.

Oh, wait, I know what strikes me as different. Game of Thrones violence is cruel nihilism. Untamed violence is stylized narration.

Ah! Well, that makes all the difference for me. "Cruel nihilism" is pretty much the definition of something I can't stand in a show. Thank you for your input on this; I'm definitely more inclined to give the show a shot, now!
