More body talk, yay

Possible TMI Alert: This week, for the first time in my life, I peed just a little bit during a really big sneeze. That is in no way acceptable, so I immediately started researching a bit. I found some interesting stuff, like pelvic floor weakness can also cause hip and low back pain--HMM. Here are the best articles I found:

Girls Gone Strong

Thrive with Jen Sinkler

And of course my beloved Breaking Muscle has an article about it.

I'm going to test my current stamina by trying this 30-minute bodyweight workout next week. I like that it's bodyweight only, includes rests, and one can go as fast or slow as needed.

In less Vigorous news, Breaking Muscle just started a series on progressive posture alignment. I'll be doing that, too, since the first week is all about eliminating rotation in the trunk and pelvis. Just what I need!

So weird that the bit of pee happened after the hip/low back problems. Seems a bit out of order.

This may be also TMI, but having had a marked increase in sneezes in recent months, the strategy I use to prevent seepage is to press my thighs together when I sneeze, which engages the PF muscles.

I don't know why I was so enamored of heroic stances whilst sneezing before, but that slight adjustment has eliminated the elimination issue.

Well, hell. I've been doing Kegels since I was a kid (prescribed for weak bladder), and I noticed the problem lessened when I stopped drinking coffee, but I still have this problem when doing certain exercises. I thought perhaps I'd just totally ruined my insides with childbirth. I had no idea there were other exercises I could do to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.

TMI be damned, the information needs to get out there! Thank you!

They might not be related after all, but weirdness is pretty much par for the course for my body.

That doesn't work for exercise, though, which is something I want to stop before it happens!

I agree! It's why I'm open about talking about my monthly cycles and such, too. I just like to give people a bit of warning in case they're squeamish or eating lunch or something. =D

Not to discourage you from strengthening your PVs and the like (I'm very fond of kegels for many reasons :D), but if the cause of the seepage is long-term bladder stress or age, exercises may not completely fix the problem. It's never bad to have a back-up strategy!

Maybe not, but there's no sense in declaring defeat before I even try!

I wasn't suggesting that you do. Merely offering a short-term fix, as building muscle is a long-term proposition.

Yes, yes it is.

*thinks longingly of my beloved barbells and heavy weights*

I use Kegel Balls. Fun and function in one.
I've got the glass Ben Wa balls, our PP double and single Kegel balls and the Lelo Luna beads, which are honestly, my favorite of them all.

You would not believe the interest we've had in them since the Fifty Shades o' Grey came out, although I don't get the fun in the plain glass Ben Wa balls because they don't have the weighted jiggle of the others.

Kegels don't really help the other issues that go along with pelvic floor weakness, though. At least I don't think so. I've been doing Kegels since I was sixteen, so...

Hey at least SOMETHING good is coming out of that horrible book!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2015-01-31 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I agree with you that squats and lunges are much better than Kegel exercises for the whole problem source.
Just sayin'.. Kegel balls are awesome, and they do strengthen the muscles without having to do all that internal gripping, haha.

That book... (which I haven't even bothered to read), INORITE? We added a paddle and silky blindfold and even a very cute little mini flogger to our line due to the popularity and interest.. so finally I get to sell a few things that I REALLY find exciting instead of just vibrators and lotions. I'm working on getting some decent padded cuffs in the line instead of the fleece lined handcuffs!
