I have the best parents ever

I've mentioned my wonderful mom here a couple times, but I don't know that I've talked about Daddy much. I just got off the phone with him (he called me at work while he was out for his morning walk) and when I we were wrapping up, I told him how much I love him. "I love you. You're the best Daddy ever." Now I'm feeling a little choked up.

My dad is the happiest person I know. He's so kind and loving and positive. As a result, he has the best luck on the planet. He travels a lot for his job and so tends to meet lots of people on airplanes. But it's the people he meets that always amazes me.

For instance: Once (because of some customer service issues) he got upgraded from business to first class on a long flight. He wound up sitting next to Dick Vitale. Now, Mommy absolutely detests Dick Vitale, so Daddy had him sign on an airplane napkin: "To Rxxx, my biggest fan. Dick Vitale" It's now framed and hanging up in Daddy's study. He's a funny man, my father. Another time, on his way to pitch for his favorite charity, Make A Wish Foundation, he wound up on the flight with Nolan Ryan, who was giving a speech at the same conference for his charity, a boy's home in Texas. They got to chatting and Daddy so impressed Ryan that the man wrote a (large) personal check to Make A Wish. Doesn't that rock?

Well yesterday, Daddy was flying back from L.A. He was already seated (aisle seat) on the airplane when he heard a woman say "Excuse me, I have the center seat." He looked up and saw a taaaaaaallll black woman wearing a gold medal. He said "You're Tamika Catchings. I live in Indianapolis and I've seen you play!" They chatted all the way to Chicago and he got to hold her gold medal. He says it was really heavy.

I'm so used to having the best parents in the world that sometimes I take them as a matter of course. And then I have a conversation with them that reminds me how completely fantastic they are. Like today. Best. Parents. Ever.
