I *loved* Detective Pikachu, and I know very little about Pokemon. I expected a super fun movie and it delivered. The Pokemon all looked real without being creepy (unless they were supposed to be creepy) and the villains all thoroughly chewed the scenery, and our Plucky Heroes were Very Plucky.

Also there were a bunch of kids at my showing (which I expected) and every time a new Pokemon came on screen I could hear both adults and kids stage-whispering the name, and the kids were all super-excited about it; which was entirely charming instead of annoying.

I just wish we'd seen Team Rocket!
