I think the only way the story turns out well is if the father actually dies thinking his son is going to go of and get married and lead a happy life. But timing that right is hard... Maybe he spent the next two years making up stories about how our relationship was going.

I don't know! Some fanfic tropes I do not need to live through - especially not without consenting to them ahead of time.
