December meme: 5 Monsters

From [personal profile] stultiloquentia, five monsters.

I went back and forth on how to answer this. So many angles to approach this from, and so many considerations. Physical monsters only (so no ghosts)? Specific monsters or classes/genres? Do I want to include cryptids? So many options! To make it easy on myself I just went with the ones that first popped into my head.

Ghosts
Ghosts, ghosts, ghosts. Metaphorical, literal, insubstantial, manifested, I love them all. I love the idea of a ghost lover (obviously) but I also like cozy ghosts who help make a home feel lived in. Sure they might sometimes be annoying but especially these days I would welcome a little mischief if it came with good company.

Tentacle monsters
What. You knew whose house you were in. The first time I saw an (obviously to me) sexually-charged tentacle monster I was like "oh well this is new. hm!" and I never looked back (if you're interested, it was a mid-80s anime called Fight! Iczer One).

Predator
Not sure aliens really count as monsters to me, but I had to include them let's be real, Predator could get it (yes, that is me slipping a Predator some tongue). I find the general Predator design quite aesthetically appealing, and I love a confident butch who also looks like they might enjoy getting bossed around a little bit.

Fairies
Maybe kinda blurring the line of "monster" here, but fairies frequently serve as the concept of the other like monsters, so I'm including them here. Jenny Greenteeth, Redcaps, etc., obviously, but also less-malevolent ones like selkies and brownies have their own concepts of ethics that frequently border on the monstrous.

Vampires
And here's the only one of the group I don't find generally sexy as a concept. I think they're interesting, though. I'm fascinated at how different eras interpret them, when they gain popularity in the the zeitgeist, etc. I used to think it would be great to be one because oh my gosh all that time to do stuff! Now the idea of living forever horrifies me, so no thank you.

If you'd like to ask me for five somethings (I'm terrible at favorites, but I'll give you five and you can pick your favorite ๐Ÿ˜‚), please leave a comment on this post!

Great monster choices! ๐Ÿ™

I also like barghests because they're sort of ambiguous - sometimes they're a portent of doom and sometimes they'll lead you to safety if you're lost on the moors. And when I was a kid we used to go walking in a place called Trollers Gill (side note: a gill/ghyll is a gorge and I just realised the word is Old Norse - the north was under the Danelaw in centuries past) and my parents loved to point out the ledge at the mouth of a cave where the barghest was known to stand. (I never saw it! ๐Ÿ˜„)

A superb list! Love the balanced menu of "infinite potential for provoking and poignant allegory" and "hehe sexy."

Oh, I definitely think ghosts are sexier than vampires, but I never say it out loud 'cos I'm a big chicken who doesn't want to court controversy. People love their vampires, don't they?
