Holy cow. It's March!

Well that went better than I expected. I actually made it through a ten minute cardio warmup, two rounds of reps on all machines, and a good stretch afterwards that helped prevent too much DOMS this morning. I only felt like throwing up once. I think I need to find something else besides the roman chair for back extensions. That thing just triggers my motion-sickness sensor too much. Urp.

Tonight is just cardio. "Just." Ha. I'm hoping I can find the rowing machines 'cos they're my favoritest. I couldn't find them last night, but the student employee at the check-in desk said there was still one around somewhere. Failing that, I'll settle in on one of the Nordic Tracks.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] adammaker for finally kicking my ass to the gym again.

Had [livejournal.com profile] bestill and [livejournal.com profile] lionsaoi over for dinner and general hanging out after that. We tried to go to Joe's afterwards for dessert, but it turns out Joe's isn't nearly so college-kid friendly anymore. They close at 7:00 pm nowadays. Who knew? I was forced--FORCED!--to make up a batch of cookies myself. Tragedy!

I woke up this morning at 5:58, which is just crazy and not a little irritating, but it allowed me to get all of last night's dishes washed so I don't come home to kitchen disaster tonight. I know I need less sleep when I'm exercising, but I didn't expect my body to adjust so fast. =)

Yay for the Gym!

Ew! to the motion sickness.
Just a suggestion: you might have less motion sicness if turn your head to the right or left while flexing on the Roman Chair. Turning the head forces you to use a different semi-circular canal in your inner-ear.

See you tonight!

Hm. I can give it a try, but looking at things going sideways makes me sick in a car...

Yes it is. I'm lucky if I get to sleep in until 5:58--that only happens when I go on a snooze button binge. I don't know how I used to get up at 4:30am every morning to get to work by 6:00 - 6:30am.

Woo hoo! You rock! I'm so happy to see you back in this virtual gym.

I have trouble with the ab exercise called "Side Oblique Crunches with Arms Extended" for similar reasons--something about the movement rocks my inner ear too much and makes me feel sick. Sometimes, as adults, we become kind of staid and don't use our vestibular balance system very much, so motion becomes more disturbing. I found that when I was training in martial arts, we did all this flipping and somersaulting and rolling, and at first it made me waaaay sick, but after awhile, I re-learned the knack of rolling around and got used to it. So it could get better . . . or not. Some motions still make me sick anyway!

Oops--just occurred to me that you're a DANCER! So you're already an expert in motion!

=)

There are certain things I know I can do and certain things are just off limits, period. Spins, I can do. Quick backbends, fine. But I can't hold an extended backbend with my head loose and falling backwards. I can't let my head fall backwards at all, really. This presents some difficulties with a few yoga poses (like fish pose (http://www.sivananda.org/teachings/asana/fish.html)), but neither my yoga instructor nor I have figured a way to get past this. It's kind of frustrating.

On the few occasions where I've tried to push myself (back when I thought it was just a mental block thing) I got so sick and dizzy I broke out in a cold sweat and apparently turned pale green. I had to lie on the floor for 15 minutes and almost couldn't drive home. Not fun.

Happy March.

See my comment to [livejournal.com profile] pointoforigin below. It's been a consistant problem my whole life. Bleah.

I just had a vision of CR knitting her own accupressure wristband.

I've tried those bands. They don't work for me, at least not for the backwards head issue. I think it's an inner-ear/sinus problem.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, the sinus issue seems likely to be the cause.

MythBusters had an interesting (and unusually scientifically sound) episode where they tested various motion sickness remedies (besides the pharmaceutical ones). They tried (as I recall) pressure bands, some mouth spray and a few others. The ONLY thing that worked was ginger pills.

When it comes to regular motionsickness (like for road trips and planes), I don't fuck around. I go straight for the Dramamine. Herbs and shit be damned.

The problem is, the type of motionsickness triggered by my head movement is not (I don't believe) caused by the same factors as "normal" motionsickness.

[identity profile] solan-t.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, well, I wasn't expecting anything to work, so the fact the ginger really did was impressive to me.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
mmm, i love candied ginger.
