An Inebriated History of Britain and a chicken salad recipe

For the anglophile on your gift list: An Inebriated History of Britain. Sounds like delightful reading.

Earlier this year I mentioned that I would not be making a new costume for Middle Eastern Weekend at Renfest this year. Ha ha ha! *wipes tear from eye* Yeah, what was I smoking? Sunday I found some absolutely amazing, translucently light striped cotton (at 40% off!) that simply begged to be purchased and made into a ghawazee coat. Lovely! Since I won't be dancing with the troupe girls at faire (just supporting the musicians and doing any solos that Jo requests), I think I should be dressed a little differently than the main dancers, anyway. So. New ghawazee coat for me.

This means I need to get on the stick about making a new belt since I got nothin' that goes with this fabric. It's very much out of my usual color range: soft greens, salmon, and cream, with gold thread. Luckily, last week I was hit with a bit of inspiration for a new bra and belt set that will be more versatile than my beloved hat bra standard. I'm gonna cover a belt and bra with a neutral base fabric (well, as neutral as I can stand, anyhow) and embellish with shells, coins and a zillion itty bitty mother of pearl buttons. Won't that be pretty? I used some MOP buttons on a belt I made for a friend, and instead of just sewing through the holes like normal, I attached them with French Knots. It looked very swank. I plan to use that technique on these wee little things.

Oh, before I forget, any of you sewist types in the area, the JoAnn Fabrics on Shawnee Mission Parkway is clearing out their discontinued Chinese brocades. They've got some stunners for $5 a yard. Took everything I had to walk away from that empty-handed, let me tell you.

Last night I tried a new recipe for a low fat chicken salad wrap. Wow, it was good.

Cherry Chicken Wraps
1/2 cup nonfat yogurt
1 Tbsp honey Dijon-style mustard
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
3/4 tsp curry powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp coarsely ground pepper
1 1/2 cup finely chopped, cooked chicken breast (8 oz)
1 cup dried tart cherries
1 cup seeded and finely chopped cucumber
1/3 cup shredded carrots
1/4 cup sliced green onions
4 whole wheat flour or tomato-flavored flour tortillas (8- to 10-inch)

Stir together yogurt, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, curry powder, salt and pepper in a medium mixing bowl. Gently stir in chicken, cherries, carrots, cucumber, and green onion. Chill for thirty minutes to allow flavors to blend.

Mound about 3/4 cup chicken mixture, just below the center of each tortilla. Fold in sides, just covering edges of chicken mixture. Roll up from one side, jelly roll fashion. Serve seam side down on a plate.

Fact: I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. People who smack their lips when chewing food or gum are rarely limited to that one unpleasant personality trait.
