Testosterone Pumps Up Hyrax Females, By Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News

May 22, 2006— Testosterone may be known as the "male hormone," but researchers have discovered that female rock hyraxes have significantly higher levels of the chemical than their male counterparts.

It is the first time an adult female mammal has been found to possess testosterone levels consistently equal to, or higher than, those found in males of the same species.

Since female members of the furry, badger-like species often outrank males, the find suggests hormone levels may help determine who's the boss, and who is not.

"Testosterone probably contributes to females’ aggression and social rank, along with other androgens as well," said Lee Koren, lead author of the study, which was recently published in the journal Hormones and Behavior.

Koren, a researcher in the Zoology Department at Tel Aviv University, Israel, added, "High hormonal levels may also contribute to females’ lack of choosiness in the mating season. Finally, testosterone also acts as a stress hormone."

"It is possible that females -- with their roles as mothers, sisters and group leaders -- are, understandably, very stressed," she said.

One of my grad students who defended this semester came by to say goodbye yesterday. She's from Senegal. She's going back home and I'll never see her again. I know this is part of my job. It's still hard. Don't tell anyone, but I started to tear up after she left the office. I'm such a sap.

Girl #2 brought her replacement skirt fabric last night. Surprise! It's not appropriate, but she insisted that's what she wanted, so whatever. At least there's enough fabric to work with this time. It's pretty thin, with a border print that will look just ridiculous as a circle skirt, but it's on her body, not mine. It's lime green and brown batik--to go with a peach floral jacquard belt and vest. *shudder* This is indicative of the mentality I'm trying to work with here. I pointed out that a patterned fabric isn't the best choice for a skirt, which is why I recommended (twice) a plain, solid color, cotton fabric. "Yes," she said, "but I couldn't match the other fabric." "I gave you a fabric scrap to take shopping with you so you could find something to go with the color." She nodded, and laughed that by-now-all-too-annoying asian girl giggle. "Yes, but it's orange, you know?"

What?

I'm beyond caring. She's paying me to make a hideous costume. Fine! I'm happy to take her money. Girl #1's costume is coming along great. The bra looks faboo and I think her color choices are going to look phenomenal (blue, gold, and black).

Tonight, hangings-out with [livejournal.com profile] roya_spirit and hopefully I'll remember to bring the leopard print bra so we can fit it and I'll knock one more item off the To Do list.
