Brag

I like to think I'm usually pretty modest (I could be wrong about this, but I think I don't often go bragging about myself--do I?). However, I have to say: I am Really Good At My Job.

Yesterday I listened to three different secretaries deal with a student's change of grade issue. I listened as they became increasingly annoyed with his multiple phone calls. Finally I couldn't stand it any longer and said "If he calls back, send him to me. I will make sure he doesn't call again." I meant it as a sort of threat against him, but (as is often the case when one doesn't know both sides of the story) things turned out differently than expected.

He did indeed call back and was sent to me. I am a firm believer in the flies/honey scenario so I answered the phone with my usual friendly-but-business-like "English Department, this is L" greeting. I didn't offer anything, and pretended like I didn't know what was going on with his situation. I let him explain the whole scenario from square one. And you know what? The situation was fucked up. Granted, it originated with his own mistake in letting an incomplete wait until the last minute for graduation, but there were a number of unusual hoops to jump through, several of which made absolutely no sense to me.

But.

I wrote down the names of everyone in his school's office and the registrar's office he'd spoken with (bless the boy for getting names) and called each person, asking for clarification. I worked out with them an acceptable method of shuttling this form around campus without subjecting my person (or another secretary) to the Kansas heat. I spent about fifteen minutes massaging the system to actually Get Shit Done instead of directing him back and forth between phones and offices. And now, lacking only a Dean's stamp (which he will obtain tomorrow thanks to my expert loophole-jumping), his issue is resolved.

It took me slightly less time to write this than it did to solve his problem. I gather he's been calling various people in the English Department for two days.

*brushes hands briskly*

So. Next?

Ahem.

My dear, that is simply because you are not someone who actually shirks responsibility.

Work ethic, FTW!

I can't remember where you work--KU? Wish you worked at JCCC! I have a very dear friend who just got a grade that will put her out of school for a year til she improves it, with no other options because it isn't offered every semester. She is in a very bad home situation--VERY bad! I'm on the advisory board for their particular program, but I don't know if that will pull any weight, or if I should use it. I'm going to see if they will let her continue with classes on academic probation AND repeat the class as a "Special Studies" deal, with an either/or resolution. Can you think of any other alternatives we could offer? She got a D in fingerspelling, and, honestly, rightly so, but partly because she never told them that she has always had diagnoses of dyslexia and ADHD, and has thusly been passed along with her horrible spelling pretty much just "forgiven" (this is NOT the way to do an IEP, in my estimation!). But it was her fault for not telling them that from the git-go, so she could get a special tutor or something. She asked me for help a couple of times and I gave it, but she never realized how important spelling is til she got the D. Sadder, but wiser, I suppose. Hard lesson.

I wish there were more people like you in organizations. I hate getting the run around to people who don't pretend not to know what the hell is going on until the point that I'm pissed off and then nothing ever gets resolved.

Do you have a department at JCCC for special needs? Like Disability Services? I'd direct her to them if you do. Often they have some ability or clout with other college offices. Might be a problem since it's after the fact, but maybe they can help her out with future issues. At UC, where I worked until recently (Cincinnati) both dyslexia and ADHD qualified a student for help.

I used to know how to work the system in Student Housing when I worked the desk. Half of it was knowing the right person to write the note to, or if it required an immediate phone call.

(Hey, do you happen to know [livejournal.com profile] fleep513? She's a friend of mine who works at UC.)
