Noteworthy(ish) items and a request

Ann Arbor streets are dotted with little 'fairy' entryways.

"I've never been to a city before where a tourist attraction has you down on you knees," Mr. Foley said.

Obviously Mr. Foley has never visited Amsterdam.

And on the other side of the coin we have [livejournal.com profile] gmskarka's post from yesterday, informing me that Elliot Abrams is the Deputy National Security Advisor. Christ. I realize that all politicians are, in some way or another, crooks. But it's a sad state of affairs when nearly every high-ranking person in the current presidential administration has, in some way or another, actually been convicted of a crime. As [livejournal.com profile] gmskarka points out, they're criminals. Not just crooks and liars. Criminals.

In other random (cheerier) news is this story about fortune cookies. I thought it was interesting that of the five or so fortunes they list at the bottom, I have two taped to my wall here at work.

And, finally, F-list folks: Please put your YouTube links behind an lj-cut (or just link them the old fashioned way). I know they don't play automatically, but it does make the f-list page slow to load. I know it's all exciting to use the new insert feature thing, but it makes the f-list page slow to load. It's not a horrible problem for me, but I know lots of people are still on dial-up, and it's just a nice thing to do. Please. LJ-cut. It's the right thing to do.

Yeah. I have a 'friend' who is about to get his ass booted because he refuses to use a cut. at. all. And he posts between 4 and 10 tiny posts right in a row. I believe this man does not have a life.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's irritating. If I have lots of little things, I save them up and put them in one post the next day. Like I did in this post, for example.

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
*hehehe* Yeah, me too....one Looooong post, behind a cut. 'Cause we know how to!

Ok, I looked at that Ann Arbor thing and was utterly charmed. How very cool is that? What a lovely thing...thanks for sharing it.

>>Made famous by the likes of Tinkerbell and the Fairy Godmother, fairies are once again getting some press.

Seriously? Made famous by Tinkerbell? LOL. That cracks me up, at the same time it hurts me.

Cuz you know, faeries and their ilk haven't been "famous" for a couple thousand years or anything.

Heehee. I do like the doors though. Charming.

"Ann Arbor streets are dotted with little 'fairy' entryways."

Yeah, these things are very cool. As far as I know, there's no real list of where they all are, so I keep finding new ones.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering if you'd managed to see any of them. *envy*!

[identity profile] solan-t.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind long strings of text. It's the pictures and memes (especially when they mess up the layout) that I mind.

There's a market/cafe a couple of blocks from my house that has one. It took me something like two years to notice it. Once you spot one, though, you start seeing more. I think I'll probably buy the Fairy Doors poster before I leave town.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, you know, if you have a couple extra bucks in your pocket when you get your poster, I sure wouldn't mind one, myself...maybe we could have a handoff next holiday you manage you come out here.

I'd love an excuse to see you again!

[identity profile] poincaraux.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds good. Assuming I manage to make it out of the house post-baby (ETB: one week), I'll pick one up.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Squeeee! How exciting for you!

Hey, pop me your mailing address and I'll get a crib quilt off to ya'll.

[identity profile] poincaraux.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I emailed it to an address that I *think* works for you. Lemme know if you didn't get it.

Thanks!!

This made me burst out laughing.

Thank you. I'm glad someone picked up on that. I was beginning to worry about my F-list...

I got it...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2006-08-17 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
but I only just read this. ;-P

Thank you for the UTTERLY charming story. We have a tradition of fairy houses in Lake Calhoun Park- they appear among the tree roots & stay until some dastard kicks them down. Kids leave pennies & ribbons & candy in front of them for the fairies. I like the idea of doors even better, though, because they'd be more difficult for jerks to destroy.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, my mom sent me the story. Isn't it precious? I'd love to build her one for her house...I wonder how hard it would be.

find a good doll house supply...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2006-08-17 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
& the only tricky thing remaining will be how to attach it. Unless you want it to open & then you have to cut into the house.

I'd love to have one, but I can just imagine Bear's outrage as hordes of children came peering up to the house. *shudder*

Re: find a good doll house supply...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!

My folks live in a gated condo community, so that's not so much of an issue.

I don't think I'd bother cutting into the house, so maybe I could make a little door for her. Maybe for xmas...

or...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2006-08-17 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Halloween. ;-) It would be even cuter if you could attach it temporarily & see how long it takes her to notice. If she hates it, you can just take it down. & think of the fun you'd have making tiny wreaths for all of the holidays. ;-)

Re: or...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No way am I getting anything non-Faire related done before Hallowe'en.

Besides, they live in Indianapolis. I won't even see her (or the condo) until Thanksgiving at the earliest.
themadblonde: (Default)

ok...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2006-08-17 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
just thought it might be easier to mount before things freeze. Then again, if it's cold enough you can just pour water on it & it'll stick to the house w/out any nails or glue. ;-)
