Women should be obscene and not heard*

Bellydancers at Aladdin Café tomorrow night. Dancing starts about 7:30. I won't be wearing the leopard print bedlah after all. [livejournal.com profile] roya_spirit reminded me how much fun it was to dress up in Halloween-themed costumes, so I'll be breaking out the fishnet for tomorrow.

Does anyone on here collect (or know anyone who collects) stamps? It's the time of year when I'll be getting international application materials and, hence, international stamps. I'm not sure anyone even does that sort of thing anymore, but if you do, drop me a line and I'll save these envelopes for you.

Seven days until Halloween and I have no idea what I'm going to wear to work for a costume. I don't have time to make anything at this point, either, dang it. I considered hauling out my Muertos costume, but I wore that in 2004 and that's not enough time to recycle, IMO. Yes, I have costume pride. Last year I wimped out and wore my RenFest costume. I should start working on my Halloween costume in February.

*Groucho Marx, in case you're curious

UPDATE: I think I've got it. If I can find something that I can make look like a conservative suit, I'm gonna dress up as a Republican. That should be both simple to pull together and terrifying to observe. I wonder where I can come up with some GOP campaign buttons...or a color printer. How about a women's small/medium navy blazer? =D

I wish I could make it to see you dance--alas, I have to work in Baldwin City tomorrow night.

My stepdad collects stamps. You'd make his Christmas.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Suxxor. But I'll dance again sometime!

I'll put the envelopes in your mailbox across the hall as I get them. Sound good?

[identity profile] subplot2.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds good, except I was one of the naughty non-GTA types who never checked their mail, so I no longer have a box!

Maybe I can stop in once a week? Give us an excuse to chat? :)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure! I'll put them in an envelope for you. You know where to find me.

Quick costume concept

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Combine your bellydance stuff with futuristic tech-doodads and be an Effinger (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author-exact=George%20Alec%20Effinger&rank=-relevance%2C%2Bavailability%2C-daterank/102-2898813-0939322) character.

Which, actually, could make for a sort of hip bellydance concept in general.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm always hesitant to wear bellydance costumes as halloween costumes. Since they're something I wear all year for a specific purpose, I don't feel entirely comfortable wearing them to a place where I won't be dancing...

I can't really describe why I find it vaguely inappropriate, but the feeling is there. I wore a bellydance costume once to an office party, but I performed at the party, too.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Logic's sound, actually. In a very real way they're work clothes, and it wouldn't make sense to use them outside of that context.

Going the other route and doing the tribal tattooing with something utilitarian and other could be an interestingly hip route. Didn't you dress as Neo one year? That'd be a striking combo.

[identity profile] skyflame.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Said costume may make me re-think about driving back into Lawrence tomorrow evening. Hmmmmmmmm.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a big banana costume. I don't think anybody would expect you to show up to work as a big banana.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
If it was a party, yes, that would ROCK. I love the mix of ancient/modern. At the office, I like my costumes to be fairly accessible. It's a drag to explain a costume (when it's not really explain-able) to professors who will never get it, no matter what.

For instance, past years (when Halloween hasn't been on a weekend), I've dressed as a baseball player, a day of the dead skeleton, and my RenFest costume.

I do appreciate your suggestions, though, really! I feel bad that I'm shooting 'em down.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You do have a point. A scary yellow point.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You could always go as a pirate...using bits of renfest and bellydancing to throw together something quite appropriate.

D.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
When I get my pirate costume together (someday!) by gods it's gonna have one of those fucking frock coats. In RED. With TRIM. And TASSELS. Oh yeah, baby.

That's what I need to start working on. Like, last week.

[identity profile] professormass.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)

To really be a GOP monster, you need some sort of sign that says, "Protect family values." Or "Support our President." Or something of the sort. Or many variants thereof.

:^)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Good call. Where do I find stuff like that? Wal-Mart?

[identity profile] jensixstones.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a button making machine that you could use. All you need is a printout of what you want made into a button.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*snaps fingers*

Y'know, I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] roya_spirit still has her button-making machine. I'm seeing her tonight and I'll ask her. If she doesn't have one, I would love to take you up on your offer. Thanks!

[identity profile] hurricanedeck.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I say you try to find a Nancy Reagan or Barbara Bush wig to really top it off.

Oh, and a "I Heart Phyllis Schlafly" button...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, no wigs. I'm going for comfort and ease of creation here...I wear a fucking wig seven weekends out of the year and that's enough, thanks.

I'm looking at this site (http://www.republicanmarket.com/store/cat?category=21) for inspiration on the buttons. It's certainly not for the weak-of-stomach.

[identity profile] hurricanedeck.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
WHOA! That is just insane!

I do like "The Road to Hell is Paved with Liberals." :-)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That was one of the only ones that made me smile instead of cringe. I want to add "Because we're the only ones who know a good party when we see it."

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god. i am reposting this site. holy shitheels and blackjack.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! Hadn't noticed the "at work" part. As I'm a bland government drone, my idea of a work costume is my blackened husk of a heart. No harm in shooting the suggestions down.

Your interest in the ancient/modern mix is yet another reason that we must game someday. Must must must.

[identity profile] tessagratton.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that one alot, too. My favorite was without a doubt the Monica Lewinsky one, though. Ouch! It's disgusting, offensive, and FUNNY!

Ps. Lydia, I have a color printer I'm sure I could be convinced to print something out on...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sending you URLS right now. There's only three of them.

You rock.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
How about a women's small/medium navy blazer?

I packed away a bunch of clothes to donate when we redid our closet, and I know that I have some conservative jackets in there. They would be a size 6 or 8. Not sure if I had a navy one or not. I can peek through the old work clothes and see.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-10-25 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have time, that'd be faboo. Thanks!
