Talking points

Prepare for protests. KU to celebrate Darwin Day.

Can someone explain the appeal of Norah Jones to me? Is it just the typical American infatuation with a pretty face that sings safe music? I listened to her first two albums and found them pretty darn boring. Her voice is, as I said--pretty, but IMO there was no soul, no variation, no emotion. She's got Grammy awards out the wazzoo, and now there's this surge of interest in her third album. I don't get it.

Cooking for other people is a wonderful thing. Thank you [livejournal.com profile] bestill for joining me for dinner last night. So many people living by themselves don't cook because what's the point of cooking for one? I understand this, but you can cook for two just as cheaply as one (as long as you're not just throwing a package of ramen noodles in the pot). And why not? For me, there are few greater pleasures than sharing food. Even the Buddha said there is no joy in eating alone. I'm not saying every meal should be a community event, but it's certainly something that people can/should try a couple times a week.

This photo of the embracing skeletons is beautiful, creepy, sad, and touching.

This is not a good week for the four-legged family members of many friends. Consider spending some extra attention to your furry companion(s) tonight. Even if you're still pissy at them for biting you earlier this week.

Sometimes it's best to admit defeat on a certain project. Mr. Ball of Lion Brand Micro-Spun, you were not meant to be a scarf. You look too much like bad 70s crochet. I'm sorry. I'm leaving you for a nice mohair blend. Perhaps you will have better luck as a beret.

Especially for [livejournal.com profile] shrijani, Old Doc's Soda Shop, featuring sodas bottled with cane sugar instead of corn syrup.

I think that's it. Stay warm.

Sadly, the closest I can come to explaining Norah Jones' appeal is that middle-aged white people need a soundtrack for awkward, tentative sex.

Either that or you can blame the rise of Starbucks, since she's got the feel of coffee shop music to her.

I'm so glad you agree with me on Ms. Jones. I respect your tastes in music and I'm relieved to know it's not just me being closed-minded about an up-and-coming artist.

Would you believe...? I have been to Old Doc's Soda Shop! My ex-husband and I made a pilgrimage, if you will, to Dublin, Texas, specifically to go there and drink Dr. Pepper made with real cane sugar. It is SO DELICIOUS. =D The Corn Conspiracy continues to seriously piss me off. I want to get some cane-sugar-only Coke, but I can't find any -- the Mexican Coke at Checker's may or may not also contain corn syrup. Grr.

I am also bored by Norah Jones. Her voice reminds me of that of my friend Deb Girnius when she is not trying, or is perhaps intentionally trying to lull listeners to sleep. I don't even think the material is that great.

And that skeleton photo is beautiful and heartbreaking. I am sure it will become one of the most famous photographs of all time.

Funnily enough, I thought of you when I saw it and the idea of hearts and bones started tickling the back of my brain. Feel free to run with it.

I wish there was more going on during the day! To entertain us, for god's sake.

I might be willing to cough up $2 to see "Flock of Dodos," but I'm not sure I'd drive back to campus at night. La-zy.

norah jones is boring.

and her music is hopelessly romantic and easy to listen to.

i was introduced to her when i was a radical nonprofit employee activist at age 22. and i loved her music from the start.

thanks for pointing out darwin day. that kicks ass. i have got to attend! awesome!

her music is hopelessly romantic

Well, there you go. I'm about as far as you can get from a hopeless romantic, so that explains her lack of appeal to me.

I wish there was more going on during the day!

Indeed. I would be sorely tempted by the costume contest. I mean come on, Moose? I'm there. Except, you know...I'll probably already be in bed by 7:00 pm.

Well except now I see this Muffy Moose character isn't a moose at all. Never mind. Definitely staying in bed.

I liked her first disc well enough because of the lullaby/soft torch singer sort of sound... white Erikah Badu covers, in a way.
It's nice background music, which is why I find Sean's description amusing as all hell.
But, I think I find the sound of The Little Willies a lot more appealing.
Now I'll have to go search this one out.

I never knew that there was soda without corn syrup! But damn, it's still got da caramelly whatever that mucks up my system.

[identity profile] fireguarder.livejournal.com 2007-02-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Was there any such thing as GOOD 70s crochet?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2007-02-08 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Um.

No.

No, there really wasn't.

[identity profile] bestill.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What about rib ticklers?

P.S. I had a great time with you--thanks for the invite!

So you gave up on the microspun. I'm not a fan of the yarn, but don't tell Lion Brand since I design things for them . . .

And . . . I like Norah Jones--not just for awkward, tentative sex, but it's good background music when I'm working. It's soothing.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the microspun will get knitted up into a beret. A nice, snug stitch that won't show the texture of the yarn so much.

Got any easy beret patterns you'd care to share?
