This is it

I'm sure many of you have seen this poster for Baz Luhrmann's new movie Australia.

I didn't plan to see the film (or even pay much attention to the trailers) until I opened up the November 28 issue of Entertainment Weekly (one of the profs subscribes and brings copies to the office). On page 14 is the front view of that dress in the poster. Friends, I might need to go see the movie just to see that garment in action. I'm considering reproducing it for the department holiday party. I have just under two weeks.

UPDATE: A million thanks to [livejournal.com profile] renniemom for finding a front view photo of the dress online.

I shall not be using that particular skirt treatment, nor shall I be consorting with livestock. What the fuck was this particular fashion editor smoking? Seriously.

That issue of EW also has a shot of Justin Timberlake and some of the male SNL crew in leotards, pantyhose, and high heels. But that is so totally not why I'm keeping this copy of the mag. It's on page 8, if you want to check it out for yourself, though.

I'm sorry... Justin is also wearing leotards and high heels? Is this what you're saying?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying.

I'm in my office all day today and I've got the magazine right here.

Is this the front of the dress? http://justjared.buzznet.com/gallery/photoitemfull.php?yr=2008&mon=06&evt=kidman-vogue&pic=nicole-kidman-vogue-july-2008-04.jpg

YUMMY!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. Thank you for the link!!!

Amazing, isn't it? What you can't see in that particular photo is that the bottom part of the bodice is layered and buttoned over, like a standard cheongsam does at the neckline.

I not going to make the skirt on mine quite that impractical.

Sucker for red dresses right here. A red dress is walking sex.

Oh man, I know. And did you see the update with the front view? *slobber*

*DIES*

Oh how I love that hair. Every time I look at hairstyles like that it makes me want to try out that style for myself...

The dress will be perfection on you!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that hairstyle, too. I used to have my hair cut in a bob like that and it was...okay. It just didn't suit my face that great.

And thanks! Here's hoping I can swing it (the dress-making, that is). I'm taking your advice and enthusiasm as inspiration to try altering some of my collected cheongsam patterns.

[identity profile] renniemom.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
cheongsam patterns???
I have a long red cheongsam that [livejournal.com profile] pastmagic absolutely drools over. I'd love to have some variations. Can we talk commissions after the first of the year?

Can't wait to see your finished product. I think the shape of that dress will be phenomenal on you.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You would kill in that dress.

We're planning to catch Australia, if you're willing to come out for it. Since it's one of a handful of movies we'll see this year, it'd be good to combine it with socializing with adults.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I have many cheongsam patterns because I've been searching for The Perfect One for nearly ten years. Of course, now I've found it and it's on a person, not a pattern envelope. Naturally.

I'll let you know how this variant goes, but I'm so hesitant to do standard clothing commissions...It's just NOT my strong point, and there are many other people out there who do it better, faster, and as a means of income.

Hm! Email me with date and time options. For a weekend matinee, I certainly might consider driving to KC.

Also, why are you so looking forward to it? Frankly, I wouldn't have given it a second glance, but if you're that eager for it, there must be something about it.

I'm a fan of Baz Luhrman in general, as he's a hell of a fine director when it comes to spectacle. Thus, this one looks like it'll be the sort of sweeping epic that's not often filmed outside of CGI-heavy fantasy movies.

[identity profile] renniemom.livejournal.com 2008-11-24 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough and respected. I don't really *need* them. It's more of a want and I should reign those in a bit for a while longer...

I can't wait to see your dress!

[identity profile] fireguarder.livejournal.com 2008-11-25 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
That dress is indeed a thing of beauty. Since I won't be at your department holiday party - or even on campus, for that matter - I hope you take pictures!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2008-11-25 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, definitely!
