Vogue pattern V8561, "Wearable Art" skirt and pants by Marcy Tilton, is absolutely, hands down, the worst pattern I have ever attempted to construct. Not a single pattern piece matched up to its corresponding alternate piece. Not a single one. Not even the freaking waistband fit the top of the skirt. I should have taken photos as I went along, to show just how bad this pattern went together. I've occasionally had to trim off a quarter inch when the feed dogs pulled fabric through a little too fast, leaving me with a slightly uneven edge at the hem. But this...this was just crazy. We're talking nearly two inches of overhang at the hem, before stitching! And then the pieces themselves...they just didn't fit together. At all. I have no idea how I was supposed to make these pieces go together accurately. The directions were complete and total crap. The very first two pieces I was supposed to seam together--I was supposed to match notches and dot. Okay, fine. But this was geometrically impossible. Unless I was supposed to warp the fabric of my universe as well as the fabric lying on the table, there was just no way. I wound up pulling down my T-square and hacking off pieces of the pattern to get them to fit.
I was excited by the funky asymmetric seams and bias insets on the skirt (the pants are wretched). But oh my god. Worst pattern design ever. "Wearable Art" my ass. "Wearable Headache" more like it. And after all that, I don't think it's a flattering style on me. I shouldn't have used a striped fabric. I thought it would accent the bias-cut parts--which it does--but it also accents my ass. And not in a good way. It pulls across my belly, too.
As soon as I realized, looking in the mirror, that this was a skirt I'd never wear, much less make again, I took great delight in wadding up the pattern pieces. Ugh. What a terrible, terrible pattern.
If I want a skirt with some funky seaming, I'm gonna slice up a skirt pattern I know works for me and add in my own bias-cut insets.
