Heartstats

I'm finally jumping on the bandwagon.

However, a bandwagon I will not be jumping on is the Passion of the Christ bandwagon. I'm certainly not going to be giving Mel Gibson my hard-earned $9.50 after this little interview. I'm not a fan of ultraviolence anyway, so it wasn't like this is huge disappointment. I didn't realize the guy was a sede vacantist. Thanks to stimps and pers for that little explanation.

hm. I'm not considering a gossip columnist interview to be a great source, and quite frankly I don't give a rat's patoot about anyone's personal religious or political beliefs in choosing what to see, but I definitely decided against seeing it after discovering the absolute spam campaign that was run around it.
THAT annoyed me to no end.

:( and we can't read your friend's explanation, it's locked.

I was discussing this just yesterday with a friend from work. We're of the mindset that an artists political or religious views really have no bearing on whether or not we like, dislike, appreciate or scorn his or her work... even when the work celebrates or pronounces the views. Mel Gibson's religious views don't make me like or appreciate Braveheart any more or less than I did before learning of his personal beliefs. The same and more can be said for We Are Soldiers. Both tell what are to me affecting, passionate stories.

It's the privilege of those living in this country to use what podium they have available to speak and preach their opinions (as all of us here do online nearly every day). Gibson's podium happens to reach more people than ours, in part b/c he has more money and knows more people. Likewise, it's our privilege to discount an artists work for any reason we choose, be it the work itself or something outside the work, like their stance on [insert political/social/religious issue here].

As for myself, I think it's a mistake to discount an artists work b/c of their personal beliefs... even when they're made public like Gibson (imho, mistakenly) has. I'm not surprised that you refuse to see the movie based on the ultraviolence, but I am surprised that his beliefs have anything to do with it. To switch to another artistic genre, I imagine that the artists behind every song I've ever loved have some belief, or deeply held viewpoint that I vehemently disagree with. I'm still going to like the song, and if I like it enough I'll buy the album. Of course, that's probably a bad example, since they don't see much of that money anyway...

Oh, sorry...sede vacantists are extremely conservative catholics, who disagree with the changes made by Vatican II.

What irks me about the statements is that he's discussing his relationship with his wife in such a manner. If I was his wife, I'd be a bit tiffed by my husband spouting off about how I'm going to hell. That's between him and his wife. He doesn't need to be yapping about it to the press.

The original interview appeared in the Australian newspaper Herald Sun (http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/). It wasn't written by the gossip columnist.

I couldn't care less about his beliefs. I like Clint Eastwood--a pretty hardcore conservative. I think Tom Cruise and John Travolta are raving loonies b/c of their devotion to Scientology. But I will still go see movies they star in (well, ones that look interesting, anyway). Why? All of them are reasonably quiet about their private lives and they don't go flapping about how their wives--their wives!!!--are going to hell. That's what really pissed me off.

I can see your point.
Heh.
We're all going to hell at this rate, and I believe we don't have to die to do it.
