Wednesday's child
Everything hurts today. Head to toe. The headache and middle-regions stuff is due to girly issues. Ngggg. Everything else, though...my shoulders, arms, calves, and glutes? All CrossFit.
Yesterday's WOD was...fun. Only one other person showed up for the 4:30 WOD, though, and he's one of the interns, so I got a lot of attention from Thomas and that was great and helpful. There were a couple other of the regulars there, hanging out from an earlier workout, but all in all, just me and four guys. It was weird, but nice to not be in a giant group for once.
For the warmup, we first did something Thomas called "wall walks" where you plant your hands on the ground not quite as far from the wall as the length of your body, brace your feet as high as you can on the wall, and then walk your hands back (in theory) to the wall until you're in a handstand. Do that twenty-five times. I walked my hands back about eight inches each time before falling. That was hard and scary. My shoulders felt incredibly unstable (which is kind of the point) and wow that is a lot of upper body strength I don't have yet. Next we were supposed to do V-ups. I did a hollow-core building exercise where I just brought my legs up to 90 degrees and then crunched up to try to touch my toes. Twenty-five times. Then ten Burpees, followed by Double-Under practice where I actually got two Double-Unders. My first ones! I was pleased.
Then, the actual WOD.
Because reliable, regular double-unders weren't gonna happen for me last night, I did six hundred single jumps. Six. Hundred. You guys, I jumped rope for nearly eight minutes. If that's not proof that CrossFit does amazing things for your cardiovascular endurance, I don't know what is. So, anyway. Six hundred single-unders. Then fifty single-handed kettlebell swings, per arm. I think I used, erm, maybe an eight-pound kettlebell? I did five sets of ten per arm, with my first two and last two sets back-to-back. No resting or putting down the bell, just swing and straight to next arm. That last set was rough. Hip Snaps Are Important. Then fifty hand release push-ups. I did ten military style push-ups before I had to go to my knees! By the time I hit 35 push-ups, I could only do three or four at a time. Thomas was at my side pretty much the whole time for those last fifteen, saying encouraging things like "just go for elbow lock-out, just get the lock-out," and "good, good, rest, shake it out, you're doing great." Then I moved to what was supposed to be twenty-five Toe-to-Bars, but for me was just swinging from the bar and bringing my knees up as high as they could go. I'm starting to get calluses from those hanging bars. Last was ten Burpees. I cranked out the first four great, but on the fifth one, I was really feeling it.
Then I realized that all four of the guys there, plus Steve (who was the early for the 6:00 WOD) were all standing around me cheering me on. Now, there are different goals for different WODS. Some you do for time, and you just do however many reps as you can do in X amount of time (whether it takes you ten minutes or thirty). Others have a prescribed time, usually twenty minutes, and if you don't get done in the twenty minutes, you didn't finish the WOD. There's no shame involved, it's just awesome to actually finish, you know? Now, I am not a clock-watcher, so I was shocked when Thomas said "Five burpees in thirty seconds! Come on! You can finish this!" I thought Yes YES I CAN TOTALLY FINISH THIS and I put everything I had into those last five burpees. They were wobbly and weak and sloppy, but I did them and I finished that fucking WOD in nineteen minutes and fifty-seven seconds. Everyone cheered and gave me fistbumps and high-fives.
Then I walked around the box until I didn't feel like throwing up anymore, which took about five minutes. Did some mobility stuff and went home.
I love how I leave my CrossFit boxfeeling like knowing I just did something amazing.
I got home, ate, showered, went to the grocery store, and didn't even look at Sherlock. I'm trying to decide if I want to look at it tonight or what.
sherwood21 offered to take a look at the armhole issue, but isn't available for a couple days. Maybe this is a sign that I just need a break already. This is definitely a sign that I seriously need to re-evaluate how I manage my LJ friends, because she's another person that I swore I friended ages ago, but...didn't. And I feel like a giant asshole about that. WTF. Ngngngngng.
This is cycle number three? four? without ibuprofen. It's getting easier, but it's still not pleasant. Ache ache ache, and the muscle soreness from the WOD isn't helping. I'm nauseated right now, too, and nothing sounds good to eat. My eggs this morning did not sit well. Someone brought in a boatload of fruit to the office (weird), and that all looks delicious and wonderful, but wow that's a lot of sugar and I'm not sure how good that would be for me right now.
Hm.

I'm going in to try the WOD tomorrow. I don't know what it is, yet, but whatever it is, I'm going to be the slowest, most turtly CrossFitter they've ever seen. I might take 90 minutes to finish it, but I'm determined to plug away at a rate that my lungs will accept.
