I loved that essay SO MUCH. There wasn't any sugarcoating or self-esteem rah-rah about being beautiful anyway--and I love that stuff, don't get me wrong. But the brutal honestly Louise wrote, there needs to be more of that, I think.

And body image isn't just about size stuff. I've had acne my whole life--it was bad enough when I was eleven that my teacher sent me to the nurse to double check that I didn't have chicken pox--and I didn't start puberty for two more years! It's been better and worse over the years, and sometimes I go through periods of taking better care of it and sometimes I have months on end where I scrub it in the shower and otherwise, eh, fuck it. And it's not just on my face, I currently have a rather large fading mark on one buttcheek.

Every great now and then someone will tell me that it might get better as I get older. Nope. I've seen my parents. Maybe once I'm, I dunno, 70.

Except for the part where she loves Sherlock even though he's a dick to her, Molly's a bit of a badass.

I have got to find the Molly/Lestrade fic that follows her progression from having a crush on Sherlock, to falling for Lestrade, and recognizing her physical response to Sherlock still, but being able to be just a friend to him, especially post-Reichenbach. It puts a different spin on her reactions to Sherlock and made me read them in a new light.

That story was just SO GOOD. Alas, I don't even remember who rec'd it or how I found it. =(

Molly and Lestrade is one of those pairings that just seems painfully obvious. Like, if any two random characters who aren't yet together were going to get together on the TV show, it would be them. (Yeah yeah Johnlock but it's not going to happen on the TV show so whatever.)

Lestrade's married, but the wife is cheating so they might get divorced.

I dunno, it's just that my headcanon for Lestrade is that he is a good man in an old-fashioned but not sexist kinda way. He'd bring you flowers when he showed up to take you out for a date but still treat you as his equal, he works hard at his job and generally tries to do the right thing, y'know? If that makes sense. Molly has dated a psychopath who was using her to get to Sherlock, and then crushes on Sherlock who is mean to her. I can see Lestrade just being a total gentleman and Molly just soaking it up. And we've established that he thinks she's attractive when he ogles her at the Christmas party.

GODDAMIT THIS IS MY LIFE NOW: writing essays on the potential sex and romance lives of fictional characters. Ffffff.

Thanks for posting that article. Especially as my body is changing, first with childbirth, and now age, it's seriously reassuring to read something straightforward and real like this. As T is fond of saying with a shrug when I fuss at myself, "Bodies are bodies." Yes, they are, with EVERYTHING that comes with them.

Forgive me while I have a "helpful privileged male response" eyeroll.

***note for clarification: T is making a statement of German resignation, that bodies age and do their thing no matter what we try, and that's ok. It's not much comfort, and he's as vain as the next person (he hates the weight he's put on the last couple of years, and edits the pictures I post on Facebook so they are flattering to him). At the same time, he's the one who has introduced me to the FKK beaches in Germany, and how to be nude in public and work on the not worrying part. *That* was one of the most educational experiences in my life. Ordering an ice cream cone, naked, from a clothed ice-cream truck guy and looking him in the eye is one of my favorite personal achievements.

Ah! Okay, I get it better now.
