How it's done

And this is how one apologizes. Jared Padalecki needs to take a page from that book.

Oh thank GOD, someone finally put together all the rebuttals of the "Drink X Amount Of Water Per Day" bullshit together in one place. Thank you, NerdFitness. THANK YOU.

Table top water garden? YES PLEASE.

For those of you who care to follow what's going on in Ukraine, a friend of mine in Kiev says this is the best English news source for the are.

Okay, and that's the linkdump for today! I've had a lot of those lately, I know.

A million thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pennswoods, who came up with a brilliant idea for a cosplay for me at 221B Con. I'm gonna wait until Monday to talk about it, though, Because Spoilers and I know not everyone on my f-list watched Season 3 as it aired in the UK. But it's awesome.

I haven't been posting much content lately because as I mentioned on Friday, I spilled tea on my keyboard and the replacement we ordered for me was HORRIBLE. It arrived on Monday and less than four hours of using it caused my right forearm to ache. So now I'm back to the crappy little lightweight straight-plain keyboard which also makes my wrist twinge but not as bad and I'm trying to limit my typing to just stuff I must do for work. So. Yeah.

Better content as soon as I get a replacement keyboard that won't send me to physical therapy. Apologies to the newcomers. I'm usually more interesting than this.

She apologised. Wow. I wonder how the fandom will take that.

Want water plants for my desk. Want.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
They had damn well better take it well and graciously.

And YES PLEASE I want one of those water plants, too. For real.

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for sharing about the water! I actually remember having an interesting discussion with coach about the varied sources of water (and carbs and sugars and proteins) when I was doing endurance running. It is amazing how many people don't use their own body's indicators (color of urine, tautness of skin) but stick to a regimen *because* it is a regimen.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)

This is because people are lazy sheep and want to be told what to do instead of actually paying attention and thinking.

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
YES, to both statements! I thought that was very well done on her part.

And if I didn't kill every houseplant I've ever had, I'd get one of those. But if I'm going to have a water feature, I want a fish tank. Preferably salt water. I had one for some time, and hubby liked it, but doesn't want another one for some reason (I think it's that "WHAT IF IT BREAKS?!" panic reflex, myself). Plus, I think if I started one, I'd go in in a BIG WAY. Like a 150 gal tank, and high wattage lights, and growing coral. PRICEY....

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what I'll do when my ergo split keyboard dies. It's over 10 years old now, and I'm amazed it's lasted as long as it has.

And THANK YOU for the tumblr link! Was that in response to my Padalecki porn? ;)

I showed it to a few of the girls here, and one said she saw an article a few weeks ago about some of the KU teachers wearing kilts-did McKitterick participate in that?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine was nearly ten years old, too. Don't be a dumbass and spill tea in yours and I bet it'll survive a while yet.

The Padaleki fracas I'm talking about is in regards to his misogynist tweets about Justin Bieber which I shan't link here, but suffice to say they are horrible and SHAME ON YOU, JARED.

I had no idea about the KU kilt-wearers. [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick only wears his on Halloween, which I think is tragic because he could rock some skirt outfits for real. He has crazy long legs.

[identity profile] renniemom.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the water article. Stolen and shared multiple times already. It seems to be a constant source of debate in my world.

I use a Microsoft split keyboard (Natural Ergnomonic 4000 version 1.0) and like it a lot.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That MS 4000 keyboard is exactly the one that I tried. The weird dip/wave thing is not friendly to my wrists.

Happy to share that water information! I think it's important. Not because I think I or anyone I know is in danger of overdosing, but just to SHUT UP the people who think water consumption some sort of competition/measure of personal integrity.

[identity profile] zitronenhai.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
LOVE the post about water consumption.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
ME. TOO.

Because seriously, drinking water until you pee clear? Fuck that. Who has the time to go to the bathroom that often?

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see. So, Jared, and not Jensen? Or were both involved?
I don't pay any attention to tweets unless I happen to see a tumblr post or a news article on the subject.

I think this is the article she was talking about-it's middle school teachers!
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2014/jan/13/teachers-kilts-not-out-ordinary-lawrence-middle-sc/

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god thank you. CORRECTING!

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
WHOA.

It's one thing to do that every once in a while, to flush your body. But all the time???

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh-no prob!

[identity profile] renniemom.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand the curve being an issue. I had one at a previous job that I liked better but can't remember what it was.

I do admit that when I was drinking so much soda I didn't realize I was thirsty for water. Now that almost all I drink is water I can honestly tell when I need to hydrate vs craving sweet.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that almost all I drink is water I can honestly tell when I need to hydrate vs craving sweet.

Yep. Just like now that almost all I eat is meat and vegetables, I can honestly tell when I'm hungry. No more insulin spikes from too many carbs (and sugar).

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)

I'm calling you out for roundabout calling yourself a dumbass. ;)

Not dumb, nor ass, you just had a clumsy incident.

I agree, McKitterick needs to wear the kilt more often. And I'd even totally understand non-regimental because KANSAS WINDS...!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd only heard of it for extreme conditions.. such as a week at the Black Rock Desert for Burning Man.

My pee will never be clear, I take too many B supplements for that. I remember days of yore before everyone felt a need to carry an adult sippy cup everywhere they went. I actually remember when I first noticed the "carry a bottle of water" trend start in Calif.. the early 80s. I thought it was stupid if one wasn't crossing the desert or taking a day-long hike.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I...guess? But I'm calling dumbass on this one because I fucking looked at the mug and said "I really should move that farther away from the keyboard" and then didn't. Sooooo.....

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait-that's a PROBLEM?? ;)

(sorry, just couldn't resist!)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Drink until you pee clear" is a HUGE mantra in the fitness world. It makes me rage.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I carry one now because it's so hard to find a damn waterfountain anymore! I used one last week at the Sackler Gallery in DC simply because I could!

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
B vitamins for the win! I take a B-complex daily, and then I think one could actually bottle my urine for use as highlighter ink!

The funny thing is-I accidentally do this quite a lot, although probably not to the extreme they're talking about.

I have a tendency to drain a glass when I'm holding it (and boy, there were some forgotten nights due to that before I learned to switch out a mixed drink with a glass of water, no exceptions), and when I get home from work and get settled in my chair after supper, I drink quite a bit of water; generally about two glasses full (drives hubby nuts on car trips).

So I have a tendency to flush my system fairly often in spite of not really trying....

[identity profile] carmy-w.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah-not really a good thing, especially if you lose too many electrolytes doing so!

[identity profile] seascribe.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably ought not to comment to give you one more thing you feel like you need to type (don't!) but, hope you get a new less sucky keyboard soon and your typing bits feel better.

[identity profile] ms-danson.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I should be carrying one. I have med side-effects that give me dry mouth and make me thirsty so carrying water is better than buying pop.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2014-01-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always been told I should drink 8 glasses per day, but I've been told a lot of things. So what I do? (now get this, it's really complex) ...I DRINK WHEN I'M THIRSTY.

oh watergarden, I love you!!!!!

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
My indicators are:

* thirsty (duh! but sometimes this doesn't happen)
* feeling restless or uptight
* my lips are getting chapped

And I'm trying to instill the "alternate alcoholic drinks with water" trick. There's a speakeasy style bar down the street from my work that always gives you a glass of water alongside your cocktail and I appreciate it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I DRINK WHEN I'M THIRSTY.

I know, right? It's like we should listen to our bodies or something. I mean, how weird is that??!?

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Did that myself the other night.. with cocoa no less, and it went right into the bed. MESSSSY.

I wish that water plant pic had some scale to it.. because those plants look so TINY.. omg, cuteness! I want one now, too.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's understandable about water fountains.. I really don't think about them because
a) I don't drink tap water that's unfiltered and
b) when you do find a water fountain, it's usually EUWWW

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I don't pay much attention to the fitness world. I suspect I'd spend a lot of time in RAGE due to all the misinformed "rules" out there anymore.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice!

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
My husband has the thirsties all the time from his insulin and goes through so much liquid daily that I'm sure it's kept him healthy, even if most of it is diet soda at work. At least he puts ice in it so he gets it watered down half the time. That article made me feel less stressed about how much of it he consumes.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-30 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh I was PISSED. It was a full cup of the very last of my tin of Mexican Spiced Cocoa.

Not to mention my eye pillow and a white (of course) slipper took the brunt of it.

tabletop water garden!!!

[identity profile] the-lucky-nun.livejournal.com 2014-01-31 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm learning that, at KU, it's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. Thus, the ACU tech lair now has blue sky light fixture panels, a beta fish that swims next to a giant poster of Cinqueterre, and two small trees. I tried to paint a mural but was DENIED in no uncertain terms. A tabletop water garden just became my new project! I'm so excited!

Re: tabletop water garden!!!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-01-31 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fantastic! I should stop by your office sometime. It sounds amazing.

I'll make sure to take pics once it's set up! I'm in a locked and restricted section, so I can't ever have visitors, boohiss.

Re: tabletop water garden!!!

Sadness.
