You see me rollin'

I took a chance by going ahead with my scheduled appointment with Andrew yesterday and today I feel okay. A little tired and a lot muscle sore, but the second is to be expected after not doing a damn thing all last week. I was pretty wiped out yesterday after the session, but not as bad as the week before. So...better? A little? Enough that I'll finish out the remaining paid sessions with him (I have four left) and then I'll re-evaluate.

This morning I spent a painful hour rolling out. Rolling out in the morning is horrible to me, but I didn't have the stamina for yoga. Plus, I was super stiff and didn't have the patience with myself to do slow and steady. I wanted those muscles loosened up asap, thanks, so self-myofascial was the way to go. Didn't make it fun, though.

Gonna roll out again tonight after dinner to help things loosen up so I can (I hope) do my time at the gym tomorrow morning without being super stiff for the first half.

Feeling marginally better about exercise prospects than I did last week. Still feeling impatient and angry about the swelling issues, though. 'Cos those aren't getting any better at all.

What exactly is rolling out? I've heard you talk about it, but I don't really know what it entails.

(I've been trying to get back on my PT regime, but it is making things hurt more than they did before, and for some reason rolling out sounded like it might be something that would ease that a little)

"Rolling out" is the standard slang term for myofascial release (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myofascial_release), usually incorporating a variety of tools: foam rollers, lacrosse balls, therapy balls, etc. It's basically a super deep tissue massage that you do to yourself. It can suck while you're doing it--releasing tension spots isn't always easy--but man it feels better once you're done.

Kelly Starrett's Mobility WOD (http://www.mobilitywod.com/) site is a good place to start for info on how to roll yourself out. There's a LOT there, and it can be overwhelming. Just so you know.

Oh, okay. My ma has the foam rollers and some alarming looking spiky tools that look like she uses them for that.

Thanks for the link! I'm hoping that actually DOING my PT like I'm supposed to will resolve the issue, but if it doesn't, I will try that.

Yeah, I've got some of those alarming looking spiky tools, too. Along with a bunch of duct-taped balls of various sizes and shapes to target different areas. I also have a habit of buying different sizes of rubber balls that I see in discount toy bins. We have a startling collection of rolling-out tools. =D

I'm glad things are getting better on the exercise front.

I don't know if it's helpful or not, but I've been reading up a LOT on the use of progesterone and such supplements, and the concensus seems to be that it can make things worse before they get better, especially if one starts it up and stops and starts back at inopportune times in the cycle. A lot of women give up on it when they go through the "slightly worse before it gets better" part, ie spotting, breakthrough bleeding, swelling, insomnia. Some have extra trouble when cortisol is a problem in the mix.

Frankly, for me, I'm going to find someone who has a bit more knowledge about it or is at least willing to work closer with me than "well, I'll write the scrip for whatever you want, but I don't believe this stuff is helpful at all". So, yeh, looking for a new PCP office. Tell me again who it is that you see now?

INTERESTING. Thank you! That's helpful information.

Malati Harris is my PCP but I'm just working with Dr. Khosh on this stuff.

Chiming in to say that the above is also my understandingt. Taking hormones (bc pills, progesterone, etc.), don't work *with* your cycle, they take it over. So think of it as your progesterone supplements duking it out with your natural production - there's going to be overlap and conflict until your supplements flat out win. As someone who used to take birth control you probably well know, starting and stopping -- even missing a day -- can be enough to cause havoc. So I'd also advise giving it time. Although I do still have concerns about the fact that you take it daily and don't have an ease off 7 days during your period.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-04-28 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep in mind I'm not actually taking any hormones. Just an herbal tincture that encourages my body to make its own progesterone.

Right, i know, but the same principle would apply: you are encouraging it to produce progesterone when it wouldn't otherwise. I mean, your body isn't selectively applying it or not, I would assume.

There has been some noise lately about rolling versus not-rolling the IT band (basically: not needed). This reminds me I need to look into that info again.

"deep tissue massage that you do to yourself"

@_@;;

Doesn't sound nice.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-04-29 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It really isn't. God it feels good when I'm done, though.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-04-29 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. I hadn't thought of it that way! I figured that my body would produce it in appropriate amounts depending on the stage of my cycle. I need to ask Dr. Khosh about how that works, exactly.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2014-04-29 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But OH GOD it feels SO GOOD to roll out my IT bands! That's the only area that I actually enjoy the sensation.
