Age of Ultron

My thoughts :

JFC WHAT A SHITSHOW

That's it. That's all I got in me. I can probably muster the enthusiasm to respond to certain points in the comments if anyone's interested, but I can't bring myself to detail my hatred of this movie without specific prompting.

I actually walked out of the theater.

I can't even muster the enthusiasm (or interest) to attach some gifs.

It was horrible, you guys. Horrible.

Suddenly feel a lot better about being the only person in my RL circle who was apathetic at best about seeing it. Life is too fucking short, I'll just go rewatch Agent Carter.

I'm considering hosting a viewing party of Avengers at my place tonight for everyone in the group who saw Ultron last night with me. See if we can cleanse ourselves with memories and booze.

[identity profile] seascribe.livejournal.com 2015-05-02 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that sounds awesome. My group is going tonight, which means I will at least have a roommate and assholeboyfriend free home for a few hours, and can watch something better on the tv.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-02 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, you could sit in front of a television without turning it on and it would be an improvement on watching Age of Ultron.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2015-05-04 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I finally bought myself a copy of Avengers (I watched it before on Netflix instant) and I may drag it out this week.

Yes, this.

I'm sitting in the theater right now waiting for the movie to start.

...

Well.

Where do I start? "Good" to know that being queer is still lethal in the marvel universe.

May I recommend Daredevil as a palette cleanser?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-03 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard such good things about Daredevil! I need to check it out.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2015-05-04 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't hate it, my comment to friends was, "I enjoyed it but it wasn't very satisfying."

SPOILERS!!!!!

My first two take aways:

* JFC Joss, stop with thinking you're so clever for sliding in a gross joke by using very archaic terminology. Ugh. The worst.

* The whole Bruce/Natasha scene. Ack. First, why is making babies implied to be the natural end result of a relationship. HELLO! Wake up! Look at yourselves! White picket fences, 2.5 kids, and a dog are not your future, no matter what weird fantasy life they've built up for Hawkeye. Also, headcannon here, but I do not think that the Red Room would have sterilization as a "graduation ceremony". I mean, Natasha's fearscape seems to include shooting a bound and hooded person as part of her training, something like sterilizing the trainees would probably have been just another part of their ordeal. (side note, The Mary Sue's points on this scene are good, and I'm enjoying Hello Tailor's posts and the ensuing comments). Also, as someone who has friends with infertility and who has personally chosen to not have kids, I resent having a woman's (in)ability/(lack of) desire to have children to be used as such a defining point for their personhood. And to top it off, the scene felt forced and Natasha did not read as true to how I see her character from the other movies. I will note that I am not opposed to the idea of two of them as a couple because one of my favorite fics is about that (and handles it much better).

Other things:

* Some of the buddy movie scenes felt like very badly done fan fiction. Also, the beginning scene was so slow.

* I did very much like Hawkeye in the last third (especially when he acknowledges his disadvantage as a superhero ).

* I liked the twins better than I thought I would, but man why did the have to fridge Quicksilver to get the reaction they needed from Scarlet Witch? Ugh. (personally, I think it's so they didn't have to worry about using that character again so the X-Men films can have him).

* Oh look, Thor eye candy again. Except, what is this scene about? Oh, a set up for the future, which is what the entire movie is really doing.

* They are officially working with too many characters. We threw in Iron Patriot! And Falcon! But didn't do anything with them because we had to try to give the main characters even amount of screen time and there's so many of THEM it doesn't work anyway!

Okay so since I left early I didn't even know about the sterilization thing and now I want to throw things off bridges. Preferably things that strongly resemble Joss Whedon.

My reaction to it was, more or less, "so that means it is easier for me to kill people because I got my tubes tied?"

[identity profile] the-lucky-nun.livejournal.com 2015-05-04 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It pissed me off so much that her sterilization was presented as a major reason she's "damaged goods". Sterilization without consent, yes, that's traumatizing. But women who can't have kids are still 100% women and 100% badass. Also, all the "no homo" joking around and the leering cleavage shots of random women in the crowd.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-04 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Christ on a cracker, I'm glad I left when I did.

The pitying look Banner had on his face made me want to punch him.

Oh I forgot about that "joke"

I would probably appreciate their points more if I knew what they were talking about. Most of the article's talking points happened after I walked out.

Part of me wishes you'd stuck around so I could get your opinion, part of me does not wish that on you.

This review by a (supposed) 9 year old is a pretty good summary and makes some valid points.

Here are two reviews that logically and calmly point out why this movie was so problematic on so many levels.

*zing!* Those are great! Except for the white on black font.

Also, the head cannon linked in Shechan19's post, also great.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

I was glad to see you read and reposted the Age of Robots rant/critique. She hit a lot of things I agreed with, things I didn't even know I was thinking. I've been feeling conflicted about my own consumption of the Marvel stuff, comics and film. On one hand, enjoyable, escapist, and sometimes a gateway to deeper thoughts and discussions. On the other hand, making big companies money while they still fall down on the job.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-12 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.
