Mad Max costume the second

Several years ago, I made an amazing costume that nobody understood and man it pissed me off because that costume was fucking hilarious.

Gas mask, ratty A-line shirt, bullet bra, Ike jacket, black pedal pushers, fishnets, and combat boots? I was MAD MAXINE. Y'all it was the best. And not a single person who saw me (besides [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick and my besties, with whom I'm posing) got the joke. So. Disappointing.

Thanks to a post I saw on Tumblr this morning, I've decided that this year I'm going as a War Girl. And anyone who hasn't seen the movie (or who thinks I'm a zombie) can just go fuck themselves because it's going to be awesome.

If anyone has links for tutorials on how to fake scarification, that'd be appreciated, thanks.

having zero makeup-fu, i don't know if these are good or not, but "fake scar makeup tutorial" seems to have a lot of options, some of which will hopefully suit!

What I'm hoping for is people who might have actually tried a method and can say it worked or give me tips. I wasted too much time, effort, and money trying to make a fake wound for Dead Girl and I don't care to repeat that.

*nods* most of those looked well beyond my ability, but straightforward for someone with moderate skills, since "pancake clown white and lipstick, both of which will look like hell in fifteen minutes" is the extent of what i'm capable of. y'all who can do actual "resemble the target look AT ALL" cosplay are some kind of goddamn magicians as far as i'm concerned.

SCARIFICATION V8!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-24 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'll be able to do anything that fancy since I, after all, have to wear a shirt.

That costume is totally hilarious. I especially love the second photo. It reminds me of a Carol Cleveland pose on Monty Python.

THANK YOU.

Now my mind it twisting around an idea of puffy paint on plastic wrap or wax paper, then peeled off and clued on. I will let you know how it works out if I give it a whirl.

Oooh! Hm! That sounds great! I've seen people do that for plastic necklaces and stuff. Good idea!

Today I heard about a burn scar tutorial - elmer's glue, let it dry, then wipe it with baby oil to get the shininess.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-24 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG that sounds so amazingly easy. THANK YOU!

BTW, depending on how this turns out, maybe I'll enter it next year in the Masquerade. Will you be handling it next year? I don't know if things will be different because WorldCon.

[identity profile] sherwood21.livejournal.com 2015-05-24 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
If they want me to, yeah, I would do it again. I don't know yet what impact WorldCon is going to have on programming & events for ConQuest.

Talked to her about it a little more - she does the glue (lets it dry), then some paint in places (like a pinkish color), lets the paint dry, and then goes over the top with baby oil, or hawaiian tropic oil, or glycerin. She showed me pictures - it looks very realistic. She also did a Two-Face with it, where she put the glue on very thickly, so it had a lot of dimension, then went over it with red & black paint.

Are you allergic to anything? Like latex?

I've got some experience with making fake wounds using both liquid latex and hot glue, of all things.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-24 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, unfortunately. I have a slight latex allergy. That's often a problem with stuff like this.

[identity profile] philrancid.livejournal.com 2015-05-25 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
The Elmer's glue thing really is a good idea then but if you want to be perfectionistic you might want to find something with a matte/powdery finish for the outer edges. Plus it tends to crinkle.

something with a matte/powdery finish for the outer edges

Like...what? Just foundation makeup over the top? Would that work?

[identity profile] philrancid.livejournal.com 2015-05-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's no bueno--most of my limited experience is with liquid latex.

Though it occurs to me that if you mean to wear a costume for a protracted period then you might want to try doing as much of the work as you can with makeup--no matter what the method of prosthetic, you'll sweat it off/loose.

You're planning to do a War Boy-type thing?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-25 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! Not sure if I want to Rule63 it or attempt a bald cap. I'm thinking Rule63 it, personally, because bald caps suck.

[identity profile] philrancid.livejournal.com 2015-05-25 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
They seem like they totally would.

And on the other question: foundation or Creme make-up or basically anything that can layer a bit and has a finish like powder. You may have to prime it with something and then powder over it--but without more of an idea of the final design I can't say what level of work you'll need. Plus I haven't taken the time to look at the links you've been given. They might trump what I've done!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-25 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if I have questions when I'm experimenting, I certainly know whom to call! Thanks!

The first Sherlock Seattle a girl had amazing fake scars and says she used gelatin. That's all I know, though.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-05-29 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm! Thanks. I'll look for scarring + gelatin + tutorial.
