The music was one-note and not interesting. All chill electronica, very little with a strong bass, much less a driving beat. And children. Like toddler-age children. Just running around. Playing. I left when one of their tennis balls hit me in the knee.

It's kind of my life, you know? People who call me a pessimist (I'm looking at you, mckitterick) can STFU. If I was actually a pessimist, I'd never look forward to anything ever because this sort of thing happens to me more often than not but I still try stuff all the time which is not what a pessimist would do.

People think I am horrible for wanting child-free spaces.. dance spaces, celebratory spaces, even living spaces. One of the things I miss most about the west coast was having Adult Only apartment complexes, and that few people griped when someone asked "no kids, please" for events.

It really isn't! Even though I'm not interacting with the other people dancing, the energy of their presence adds a lot. It's something I can't describe very well, but I completely understand how you feel.

I got used to rarely having kids around me (I live in Portland, Oregon), but then like six of my friends have had babies in the last year.

And I like babies, but toddlers and school-aged kids are just attention-hungry ALL THE TIME, so I find it nearly impossible to socialize around them.
