She hit the floor

I spent over $100 at the grocery store yesterday which was surprising since I'd gone in to purchase only food-I-think-I-could-eat-under-dire-circumstances which pretty much means potatoes in any form. I bought two bags of potato chips with ingredients I am not technically allergic to, as well as a bag of Yukon Golds that I'm throwing in the Crock Pot tomorrow to cook down for mashed potatoes. Also some garnet yams and Japanese sweet potatoes just because. I baked four of the largest Golds and put them in the fridge so I can make fried potatoes if I'm feeling particularly energetic. Pro tip for making fried potatoes? Bake them first! Thanks Grandma.

The surprise expenditure was due to the fact that they had Coconut Aminos on sale for a dollar off per bottle and since I use about a bottle of those every other week...Also, stocked up on almond butter because it's one of [personal profile] mckitterick's favorite foods and the man deserves to indulge himself while I'm binging on consoling myself with potato chips.

When I stopped by the library, I had the energy to get the one book I knew I wanted, but when I looked at the music section my heart and stamina failed. There was no way I was digging through those horribly disorganized and cram-packed racks that you have to take out a whole handful of sleeves to browse them. No, thank you. Maybe someday when I have an entire Saturday afternoon to spare? *sigh* Come on, library. Find a better way to organize your music collection. I wonder if/how I could browse the collection online.

The fact that today is my last day in the office for six weeks doesn't feel real. It's a good thing I spent the week busting my ass to get things done before my departure. My motivation for productivity at this point is low low low low low low low low.

Yummmm.. I love potatoes. LOVE POTATOES.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-04 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, too. I can eat a cold baked potato straight out of the fridge. Salt is preferred but not necessary. God. Potatoes.

I was inspired to fry up some leftover potatoes and chicken. This is a win situation.

I didn't know that about drying potatoes! Thank you! :D

I hope your day goes smoothly and I'm sending you a ton of speedy recovery wishes for your procedure!!

Thank you! Yes, try that next time you want fried potatoes for breakfast. SO GOOD. SO TENDER.

Do you just chuck whole potatoes in the crockpot sans liquid? I am intrigued. I just bought a bag of yukon golds for a recipe, and I could try this with the remainder.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-04 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna put a splash of almond milk in there just in case, but potatoes have a lot of moisture, so I think they'll be fine. I got the idea from this blog post here (http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-mashed-potatoes-in-the-slow-cooker-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-212550).

[identity profile] msmitti.livejournal.com 2015-12-04 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
oh jeezus--YES!!!

[identity profile] donutgirl.livejournal.com 2015-12-04 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I just made sweet potatoes in the crock pot for the first time. Advantages: it didn't steal one of my (3) stove burners, which left me more room for other sides, and I didn't have to worry about getting the timing perfect.

main disadvantage is the crockpot is slightly more cumbersome to clean than a regular pot. but only slightly.

I'll have to try the mashed potato recipe. loooove mashed potatoes.

Crock pots are so great!

[identity profile] kalimeg.livejournal.com 2015-12-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hint: crock pot liners.

for best results put 1/2 to 1 C water in the pot, then insert the liner. Keeps food at the bottom from burning.

thanks for the tip!

Plain Utz or Grandma Utz (fried in lard!) are my forever food. Do you need to stick to brands that are fried in olive oil?

Which reminds me, I have a pound of leaf lard and a new-to-me crock pot, time to render!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-04 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy wow I've never heard of those. I need to find me a bag!

Check the labels--I don't think every variety is fried in lard anymore.

In my early teenage years, when I lived on the east coast, before I ever thought of being a vegetarian, when I stayed over at a friend's house, our tradition was to buy a big bag of Utz chips and a pint of Ben and Jerry's and rent a movie, usually one we had already seen, and consume all of it.

When she first moved to the west coast and lived with me, she mail-ordered a whole case of Old Bay Seasoning Utz chips. Hah!

[identity profile] silverfae.livejournal.com 2015-12-06 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Old Bay Seasoning chips? OMG must find.
Thank you for that mouthgasm.

Best of luck with your surgery and recovery. I am sure that all the potato goodness with help soothe your shattered feelings.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-04 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

Well, you know how I feel about potatoes. \o/

I'm so glad you've been able to prepare well for your leave. (hugs hugs hugs)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-05 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. At this point, I know (intellectually) any anxiousness is just pointless worrying and I can easier let it go. Such a good place to be in.

Like, four hours later, and I finally get the joke you set up with this entry title. Egad.

[identity profile] manintheboat.livejournal.com 2015-12-05 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I love coconut aminos.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And nobody knows about them! Even the person at the check-out aisle in the health food store asked me if they were any good. PEOPLE YOU ARE MISSING OUT

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2015-12-06 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed they tasted like Bragg's Amino Acids.

I can remember when every hippie/lefty/vegetarian person I knew had a HUGE bottle of Bragg's in the fridge. It always just reminded me of watered-down soy sauce.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't tried Braggs but I love me my coconut aminos.

[identity profile] siro-gravity.livejournal.com 2015-12-06 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
boy-o-boy, I love taters. Any which way they're fixed, they're good. And they are also on my "allowed" list.

Best wishes to you for a tolerable surgery. (((((you)))))

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

[identity profile] aprilstarchild.livejournal.com 2015-12-06 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
In a similar situation I would probably buy every kind of pasta Trader Joe's carries, lol.

I'll be thinking about you on Monday! Best of luck!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-07 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, bb!

[identity profile] silverfae.livejournal.com 2015-12-06 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG dem taters! Thank you for that crockpot tip. I missed mash taters this year at Turkey Day because Mum makes roast taters.. super yummy in the turkey drippings. I brought the leftovers home and made a breakfast casserole the next morning.
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and sending good vibes.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2015-12-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! I left mine on a bit too long and the discolored but still came out tasy.
