Ooooo, shiny!
Went with a group to see Ghost in the Shell 2 last night and oh. Oh. So so so pretty. No, I didn't understand all of it, are you kidding? But wow was it gorgeous. I think I liked it better than the first one. The characters were fleshed out and the interaction between Batou and the ex-detective was really good. Did I mention it was absolutely gorgeous? Wow. I'd like to see it again in the theater. Just. Beautiful. Like the first one, there were multiple layers of philosophical and spiritual questions that never get answered. Good for conversation and contemplation. I could have done without so many bizzarre quotations, though. What was up with the Elephant In The Woods thing?
I heard some funny/pathetic news yesterday. Some members of the English department might think
mckitterick and I are having an affair. On the surface I find this highly amusing, but at the same time I don't want co-workers to think I'm that sleazy. I mean--married man. In my department. When I'm good friends with his wife. Yuck. I asked my office mate if she'd heard the rumor and she was very surprised by it. So I can at least hope that the suspicions are limited to a few people and if anyone asks my office mate, she'll set them straight.
With cool weather finally settling in, I take solace in the fact that I can start wearing my twinsets again. Today: The gray cashmere set that
kijjohnson handed down to me. Thanks a million, sugar! I love it. So soft and snuggly. I feel like a naughty Sandra Dee.

Buddhism--from the Dhammapada. I think the entire movie would make more sense knowing more about Buddhism, which I don't know much, so I did some looking.
The elephant forest quote: "It is better to live alone, there is no companionship with a fool; let a man walk alone, let him commit no sin, with few wishes, like an elephant in the forest."
There is this one also, but I don't remember if it was in the movie: "If a man find no prudent companion who walks with him, is wise, and lives soberly, let him walk alone, like a king who has left his conquered country behind,--like an elephant in the forest."
AKA: Living alone is a better way for one to avoid evil from influence caused by association with fools.
Unfortunately, it is my job to associate with them everyday. *Sigh*

genius!
That movie is a work of genius. I think entire courses will be taught about it. I want to teach a course about it.
