Tuesday collection

Stull Cemetery, about half an hour from where I live, is a famous gate to hell. It's rumored to be why Lawrence, KS, was chosen as Dean and Sam's hometown in Supernatural.

This week's collection is Tuesday, October 29: Cemeteries.

Pretty sure I've been through Stull as an alternate route between Topeka and Lawrence. ;) Never knew about a gate to hell. :)

I enjoy prowling cemeteries-- in one of my grad history classes, we did a whole unit on what all the symbolism on headstones represents and also researched a selection of children's headstones at a cemetery that were in the poor section, so there wasn't much to go on besides the name and date. I remember one was just a slab of cement that a family member had written their name in before the cement hardened. I also enjoyed the cemetery on the island where all my dad's family is from, off the coast of Germany. The old headstones there had raised lettering, which must have been hella lot harder than inscribing it. Although I think the Puritans had the creepiest tombstones--lots of skulls and skeletons!
