I got so much writing done yesterday! Over a thousand words on Fit to be Tied, a bit of Deconstruction edited, and three big sections revised (~4k words) of Other Project. By evening I felt so much better than usual, too. I think in These Trying Times I really need to get out of my head as much as possible and writing is the only way I can (reliably) do that. Even most media programming can't quite do it (Sarazanmai being the most recent and reliable example thank you naye! thank you so so so much).
Of course because My Life, my laptop is starting to Really Fail For Serious this time. The trackpad started acting wonky several months ago, and now sometimes the keyboard freezes. Yesterday it started this thing where it doesn't boot the first time. Just sits at the Windows opening screen and I have to do a hard reboot. It always started on the second try *knock knock* but, uh... that's not good. It did it again this morning. I did a backup, and I'm emailing myself a copy of every document I touch during the day, just in case. sigh
It's just a bit over five years old, which I think is an egregiously short amount of time for something that cost $1k but I suppose that's the norm, probably even slightly longer than the norm, for computers. Offensive. The problem is compounded by the fact that I have truly monstrous luck with tech (well, I have terrible luck in general, but my bad tech vibes are--as most of y'all know--legendary) so I always, always purchase major electronics locally, even though they cost more. Returns are just so much easier that way. I can count on having to return probably three of every four electronic things I purchase, including literally every single major appliance purchased while I've lived in this house. *emoji shrug*
We've got some mega masks coming at some point. They're practically full-face things with N95 filters. I can't find the seller McKitterick used, but here's an Arab Emirates (???) amazon link. Don't those look fancy. When they arrive, we're risking a trip to Costco in Kansas City (about 40 minutes away) to buy me a laptop. That's where we got this one I'm using now. Hopefully I'll have similar luck with the new one.
Today I'm (ugh) working on filing for unemployment and (yay!) writing some of y'all's letters.

Oh wow, that is amazing. *stares some more*

That makes so much sense! Yay for a successful day. :D

You can say that again. I'm so frustrated with this kind of thing.
Good luck with your laptop; I hope it holds out and the transition to a new one will be (for once) a smooth one.

My laptop is about six years old and has developed some issues (always has to be plugged in, for example), but I hope it will keep going for several more years. I really only use it for writing, surfing online, and streaming shows, so it's not like I need anything extreme.

I hope the things you were aiming to do today went well, despite unemployment-filing being inherently aggravating.
Fingers crossed for your poor laptop!

Crossed fingers much appreciated.

Before you go to Costco (a store not represented in my fair state), do All The Things to fix your computer first. Do a backup, create a System Restore Point, and then boot into Diagnostic Mode and poke around. Check your drivers. Update Windows if you haven't been. Revert to factory settings if you must. (I saved a computer this way but had to reinstall all my software.) Because you're right: $1K should last longer than that.
I wish I could just come over and mess with it for you, just to make myself happier.

That "power of Shen Wei" reminds me of that one icon I made:
The Hallows paintings are amazing. All that artist did is amazing, actually.

Oh wow. O_O I once lived in a place where the electricity was wonky - i.e. the voltage wasn't constant, as provided by the... provider. So lightbulbs kept burning out, especially the low-energy ones, because they're even more sensitive to changes in voltage. Took us a few years to figure out that the whole street had that problem and that it was a problem with the local wiring. O_o
After five years is indeed quite a normal time for laptops to break. Mine is showing signs as well, and it's not even four years old.

Tech issues have plagued me my whole life. What makes it extra hilarious is I actually used to work in tech support. 😆 One of my (many) computers at my last (regular old admin-type) job literally caught on fire. I was apparently legendary with the KU IT department.

Agreed on both counts.
literally caught on fire
OMG! :D (Probably not funny while it happened though. O_O)
