Liberal!

Excellent little manifesto here:

The Future Is Now

[livejournal.com profile] fridayfiver Five of seven, half a dozen of each
  • One moment of pride: After finishing my first sword dance with Lois at RenFest this year, she told me she enjoyed dancing with me.
  • Two spells of greediness: Anytime I look at my fabric stash; My first visit to The Cheesecake Factory, although that's more Gluttony, not Greed.
  • Three times you felt lustful: Today; yesterday; and the day before.
  • Four moments of envy: I think this is probably the only Deadly Sin that doesn't influence me in some way. I just don't get envious, really. *shrug*
  • Five times you were angry: Last week's room reservation fiasco for the dissertation defense; At a previous job, the supervisor who didn't care for me personally gave me a bad review based on his feelings instead of my performance; Nearly every time I've gone to a Graduate School meeting; When I was wrongly faulted for doing something because making the accusation made the other person feel better; This last Tuesday.

Answering [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive's questions today as written would be impossible for me. I don't classify my life experiences into "the best" "the worst" "the nicest", etc. So I'm modifying the questions somewhat.
    1. What was the nicest thing is something nice anyone has ever said to you? A person who asked me for advice and trusted me enough to confide in me.
    2. What was the meanest thing is something mean anyone has ever said to you? That I was untrustworthy.
    3. At times, lots of people never tell us what they are really thinking. Who is the one person that you would really like to know what they are thinking (as far as how they feel about you), and why? Eh. I figure if someone can't tell me the truth about how they feel about me, they aren't someone I care enough to know.
    4. What was the nicest thing is something nice you have ever said to anyone? I know your flaws and I still love you.
    5. What was the meanest thing is something mean you have ever said to anyone? Silence speaks better than words, sometimes.

This weekend, [livejournal.com profile] _mac_ and [livejournal.com profile] stuology's wedding. I have nothing to wear. Still haven't purchased a gift. Urm. Has anyone else heard the weather forecast for tomorrow? Dudes.

And down to 143.8 this morning. 140 is so close I can almost smell it. This will be the Holiday Season Of Great Willpower, I hope. It's been almost a year. Forty pounds down. Not gonna blow it.

It's supposed to be sunny and upper 50s tomorrow, last I heard (which was yesterday, so I dunno).

And three weeks to go before Thanksgiving. Plenty of time to get those last four pounds off. :)

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only losing about a pound a month though (good thing, after the scary-fast loss of about 10 lbs during RenFest). I would like to be 140 by the end of the year, but I'm not stressing about it.

    [identity profile] skyflame.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even look at weight anymore - I go by clothes size instead. Makes my life less stressful, except when I obsess about it. :)

The trick to the holidays is to eat as if one is eating japanese food/style. Have a very small portion of every thing and savor each bite on it's own merits.

The way I keep myself from getting weird about food is to try to eat this way generally. Americans always seem to think that more of something is better. If I eat the perfect bite of the richest chocolate, I don't want another, as it would just be more, not better...does that make any sense? It seems though that crap junk food is designed to just make you eat more...mostly I think, because it doesn't really taste good.

    Rambling...Flexaril...

Exactly. I've spent the past several months changing my eating habits. I have binge eating problems. Proud to say I've not been on a binge since July! Woo!

And careful avoidance of sugary stuff has lessened my taste for it considerably. I had a two pieces of Halloween candy (a mini Payday and a mini Snickers) at work on Monday and those were plenty. Used to be, that bit of sugar would trigger a binge. But nope! No cravings! It's wonderful.

    [identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I also try to only actually indulge in food of quality.

Meaning, if you are going to actually eat sugar, get a dessert from a proper french bakery (not some freaking Panera) or at a restaurant with a proper chocolatier...

It make the plastic crap pale by comparison.

There's a Cheesecake Factory across the street from my workplace. Now, if only they would make some sugar-substitute cheesecakes...

So, if your mom sends you a big batch of chex mix, you can pass it along to us, eh?

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
If you're dying for some, I'd be happy to make a batch for you, using her recipe. Cocoa-making is on the agenda for this month, too!

    [identity profile] 0verdrive.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hrm... Cocoa, you say! Any chance I could get some of that? ;)

(For those not in the know, chernobylred makes the .best. .cocoa. .ever.)

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'll set aside a baggie for you. If too many people want some, I'm gonna have to ask for donations. =)

    [identity profile] 0verdrive.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
I know you usually have a pretty high demand -- I'd certainly chip in for ingredients. ;)

    [identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'll make donations, because I know that I'll want some! I even think I still have the jar from your last batch.

Ohh Chex mix is one of my favorites.

I'll have to try this cocoa that is raved about

    [identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't gotten the gift yet either. Prolly get a Target gift cert, or just give em $20 in a card.
I don't know them all that well.

What to wear? Don't matter, it's the bride that counts anyway. ;)

    [identity profile] radcliffe.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know the weather will be amazing! I am trying to figure out what to wear too. Dignified or whimsical.... Hmmm.... See you there!

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I know Stu would appreciate whimsical... =)

    [identity profile] green-tara76.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
That is amazing! I lost 20 last spring and have already put it back. Good for you! You need to be my new inspiration. Any great tips to share?

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
You don't look like you have 20 pounds to lose. Wow.

How I did it: Stressful breakup, RenFest, moderate exercise, and only eat what you need, when you need it.

    [identity profile] green-tara76.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah I do. I'll put it this way: I'd LOVE to be where you're at on the scale. I had three of those same things going for me then, but totally fell off the wagon. Because I freakin' love food, and am generally kind of lazy. Sigh. I also love looking smokin' in my old clothes (or some new ones!) Time to climb that hill again. Thanks for the motivation!

    [identity profile] poincaraux.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
Can you recommend a few good cookbooks? The ones at the top of my list are barely good for maintaining a constant weight, and they're definitely trouble if you're trying to drop pounds. But, I'm not willing to settle for non-tasty food, so I'm kinda stuck.

By the way, the current top-of-the-list is The Millennium Cookbook (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0898158990/qid=1099677062/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/102-2471970-6979367). Wow, is it good (and, unlike all of my yummy French and Italian stuff, not so fattening). The meals are not quick, though, so I rarely cook out of it when I'm not entertaining.

If only Woody Allen's Sleeper were telling the truth about food ..

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, most of my cooking is off the cuff. I do have a favorite cookbook but I can't remember the name and it's packed up right now. It's from Ten Speed Press, and it's something like "Low Fat One Dish Meals." It says low fat, but it's really moderate fat and doesn't rely heavily on carbs. Lots of recipes in the Moosewood cookbook (the original) can be modified to be healthier, too, and they're usually cheep eats and easy.

Go you! I am down 15 from the breakup, not so stressful, but I'm just not buying the junk we used to keep in the house. So riding that momentum I have joined... a gym, first work out tonight! Madame says the cocoon will fall off, but if I wiggle it will fall off faster!

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2004-11-05 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
    Good for you!!!
