My new laptop arrived. McKitterick is helping me finish setting it up today. He's so helpful with stuff like this, doing what he can to keep Microsoft spyware, etc., off and avoiding (some if not all of) the tricksy shit they try to pull like forcing you to sign up for cloud storage. If all goes well, this'll be the last Dreamwidth post I type on this laptop. I got it sometime during the summer of 2015 and I only remember that because this photo of Gwendoline Christie was my wallpaper for years and that came from this Harpers Bazaar article that fall (Harper's photographers have my number I swear).

I tend to develop emotional attachments to electronics that last a while in my presence so even though this computer has developed many odd tics (so, so many) and probably slows down my productivity a considerable amount (unreliable keyboard cooperation, randomly skittering cursor, an overly sensitive touchpad that sometimes goes completely dead), I'm loathe to pack it up.

I've got at least one irreplaceable sticker on it. One of those limited run so they don't fall afoul of copyright things. It's an "ad" for "Toothless Fishing Co.: No Eels!" I really shoulda bought more than one of them, but oh well. I need to see if I have any more of the oh my god they were roommates stickers and if not, I'll buy more. I already bought replacement Guardian Stickers from AvenueX. I am... uncertain whether to attach another AO3 Hugo Award Winner sticker at the moment. Maybe once we see how the elections shake out.

Speaking of which, I've been thinking of putting up a post for people to talk about the AO3 board candidates. I've been reading the Bios and the currently available Q&As, and... I dunno, they all seem so standard and... benign? I'm side-eying the fact that there's only one candidate who has not either served on the board already or been a member of the Policies and Abuse team which I thought? did not? have the best record? Anyway, my main concern with making a post about that would be if/how I should filter it. I'd like people to be able to discuss by name any candidates they've not had great experience with. That seems important. But it also seems like a call for trouble. Perhaps I'll just put up an access-only post and hope for the best. Would people be interested in discussing the candidates with me? Because I'd like to be more aware of who I'm voting for, but I'm getting less than nothing from the very-political-sounding candidate answers.

I would appreciate a way to discuss the AO3 board members. I've been feeling the same way-- I've never interacted with them fannishly or in rl and can't really tell what their stance would be based on their statements.

It may just be me that feels like it's part of the lack of transparency that they're so careful to keep the candidates' names divorced from their fannish handles, because I feel like I'd have a better bead on people if I knew those. In AO3 terms, my only real interaction with anybody was waaaaaaaaay back when I was a tag wrangler, and then it was only the committee in charge of tag wrangling, and it was only to redistribute my workload (I was the first wrangler to tackle K-pop, like all of K-pop), and then to resign. The only names I remember were the usual suspects, the core group.

Really, I'm waiting to see their answers to the questions about Racism in the OTW. Are they all going to do political soft peddling? Will any of them talk about concrete ideas, or personal investment/commitment? And you're right that Policies and Abuse doesn't have the best record, especially regarding racial issues, and we've already seen the Board's resistance to either policy or structural changes, so. I am dubious. That seems to be a theme for elections in this nightmare landscape of a year.

Anyway, count me in if you put up a post.

I hate to jinx anything but after an exhausting few hours yesterday, we're having an okay time getting acquainted this morning.

I get like that with trusty electronics - my first laptop was really hard to let go of, and I was nostalgic for the blue lid and the manual volume key (...) for a long time. It moved twice with me even though it was way too old to use for anything at all, just because I didn't want to take it to the dump. OTOH, its successor was a mis-buy (bought it right before prices dropped; was buggy and ran hot from the start) and I had no trouble at all getting rid of it when it was finally too old / I had enough money to feel like I could reasonably replace it.

I hope you and your new laptop will have a great start together!

Thank you! Here's hoping! ✌ I have such a fraught relationship with electronics. Anytime something lasts more than 6 months with no major issues for me is a near-miracle so the ones that last are special.

I feel you on the laptop..I love the precision and speed of new, but I *hate* setting it up, and going to grab a meme or pic to discover I don't have it *here*. Double frustration because I despise using any cloud services.
Note to self: might be time to archive some flickr images and start using it more often again.

Yeah when I went to their examples of the auction offering, I saw that tear away style on another one of their covers and I was like PERFECT. I'm delighted it came out looking even better than it did in my head.

Yay for a new computer! But woe for losing the stickers. I tried to apply the stickers to mine in a way I'll get them off again, but... considering how hot they get, it's probably a lost cause anyway.

And yeah, I can't believe that artist only got four bids? Although I did come down hard on my second bid (jumped straight from $35 to $50) so maybe people got scared off...
