Ah, so much pretty. :D

Can't wait to find out what they've done with the Time Engraver this time!

Show of hands, who thinks drama Shen Wei does have the ability to erase memories?

Oh yeah, I like that. To me, the trolling in that scene isn't about him having the power, but that he might use it on Zhao Yunlan.

I like to think he does. ZYL probably thinks so too, hence his "Oops, maybe shouldn't have tempted fate like that!" expression XD

What Shen Wei wants, though, is the power to make him remember.

OH. :jaw drops:

That line is a story in itself. 🔪💔

Food naming (from your link dump)

Thanks for the interesting article. I always look forward to your Thursday collections because inevitably there is something juicy in there to challenge me and get me thinking. Personally I think the solution to the problem of what to name a recipe is somewhere in the middle, because we're in a transitional era in history. Using the original name for a food (e.g bibimbap) with an English translation alongside it in parenthesis seems like a good solution, so we can all learn and have fun with this thing that might be new to us. Case in point: I know of a popular Pho restaurant called "PhoNatic", which encourages English speakers to learn the correct pronunciation of this delicious dish (and is a fun bilingual play on words too). That said, I believe Chefs who just appropriate without crediting their inspiration should be called out. And if it turns out that they've actually reinvented a recipe in a case of culinary convergent evolution, they should point that out because that's fun too. Every culture has some kind of sandwich, some kind of dumpling, some kind of noodle soup -- and isn't that wonderful?

On the issue of food naming - I 100% am for keeping ethnic foods with their ethnic names for one main reason - to make ethnic-sounding things more normalized and acceptable in a world that values anglicized EVERYTHING over ethnic.

I grew up in a society where my dad had to literally hide or sometimes throw out his roti at lunch, because the boys at school would make fun of him (for being Indian) and he was ashamed of his food, while the rest had white bread sandwiches. Western society still make fun of Indian names, and Indian-sounding things today. Even today, I have to deal with this sometimes with students at school, when they use it as a form of bullying. Sometimes it's a student's name, sometimes it's the same $%@# roti thing! Unbelievable. :b

Hee. That's the one thing I'm getting better at from zoning out on Food Network and amateur cooking videos on YouTube. I'm slowly learning how to pronounce different kinds of Asian cuisine, and even picking up some cooking tips too! :)

None in particular - I usually just do a YouTube search on the traditional food name, and click on random vids based on the English titles. My scientific method is that if it's a person of that cultural origin doing the cooking, chances are they'll pronounce the food word correctly. Plus I usually tend to click on the ones featuring older folks, for that 'authentic home-cooking' style. *g*

Heh. I like that the older folks videos tend to get down to business, without all the posturing. Plus they seem less about the graphics and stuff, so instead of just music in the background and snappy editing with a list of ingredients (like so many clickbait food videos), they're more likely to talk you through the whole process, like a traditional tv cooking show. Meaning you get to hear how the names of foods are pronounced, several times. ;)

Oh absolutely agree. And sorry that happened to your brother (and still happens today -- that's awful). An English translation (specifically as it pertains to a *written* recipe title, in parenthesis, alongside but not replacing the original name -- as described in the linked article) hopefully will help to familiarize terms so that they become adopted as everyday words, so that one day translation is no longer necessary (tacos, anyone?).

Yes! 'Taco' was the one that immediately sprang to mind as a normalized ethnic food everyone now knows. 'Tortilla' too. It's just a matter of putting a name out there, and eventually it'll be accepted and understood. :)

Based on nothing in particular, I think Shen Wei probably does have the ability to erase memories, but only to a "These are not the droids you're looking for" kind of degree, not like "sorry, several years of your life are now gone." (I think that would be traumatic for all concerned, and he's having too much fun trolling Zhao Yunlan to have that kind of associations with this particular power.) I think he has a bunch of his own memories that he'd probably like to erase and can't.

Well, you already know I do. I was just surprised at myself for the way I used it, since I generally consider it a pretty horrific concept.

What do I know what abilities Shen Wei has? He must have a shit-ton of them.

But: when in doubt, I would attribute all the novel abilities to the drama version, too. (But I don't think he actually applied that one to Zhao Yunlan in the drama - as opposed to the novel. But, tbf, Zhao Yunlan in the novel also had the ability to wipe people's memories.)

eta: had to come back to comment on that b/w Bai Yu pic. I had never noticed that one can see his slim figure through the shirt. O_O How are you so thin?
