I remember watching it on tv and being genuinely terrified for the people protesting. I recall having the (in retrospect somewhat dumb) reaction of: but it's their own people?!
I don't think I heard anything about the lead-up to the massacre, but having this come just months before the Berlin wall fell sure was an education to me about how the US treats the people we consider allies vs. enemies.
I remember being 13 and watching this on the kitchen tv. The aftermath made me super nervous in the coming weeks when Eastern European countries started fighting for democracy and sovereignty.
