Shen Wei's face in this gifset. On rewatch, it's more obvious that he's hurt, disappointed, and heartbroken--not angry or distrustful as it might look on the first (unspoiled) watch and it's just...oooof. That crease in his nasolabial fold--the one that forms when you're trying not to cry? 😭💔
One of the reasons I will always appreciate Tumblr, despite it often being annoying as hell, is how it changed the way a lot of us consume the nuances of scenes and the acting choices in them. Being able to watch those few moments loop over and over, analyzing them and picking apart every micro-expression, is a revelation and delight.
For another example, Zhao Yunlan teasing Shen Wei in the altered personality episode and it made me ponder.
Why does Shen Wei look so done here? What tipped him over into this impatient irritation when he's usually so indulgent? Part of me thinks it's that he wants so much for Zhao Yunlan to care for him, to wait for him (*sob*). There's also the fact that things are getting increasingly serious but he (thinks he) can't tell anyone how serious.
I also like studying Zhao Yunlan's response. To me, that expression in the last gif reads as re-calibrating after a misstep. Zhao Yunlan pushes people all the time but he's usually good at knowing how hard and far to push. It's obvious he crossed a line and I wonder how much recent experience he has with recovering from that.
Also this one of Da Qing waking up Zhao Yunlan by being annoying. Look at the love on his face in that last gif! Not the expression you'd usually see on a cat who just got smacked in the head. Ah, this show.

Yeah, I think he just wants Zhao Yunlan to be genuine, because he remembers how genuine and emotionally open Kunlun was. And Zhao Yunlan knows that about him to some degree, but he still not all the way to Kunlun yet. And also, some element of "don't joke about your health"? ♥ ♥ ♥
And that Da Qing moment is delightful. These two are such a great duo.

Excellent reading, and maybe in part because he's not used to being as intimate with anyone as they are becoming? There's more depth and more complexity in the relationship and he doesn't have a clear view of where all the lines are yet?
