December meme: 5 Mystery Movies
From goss, five mystery movies.
Knives Out
Absolutely the best modern take on vintage whodunnits. And thanks to the stellar writing and politics I'd say it's better than a lot (any?) of the stuff that came before. I haven't watched the sequel yet but it's at the top of the list for things to watch when I have energy to engage with a piece of new media.
And Then There Were None
A miniseries not a movie, but the 2015 adaptation with Miranda Richardson and Toby Stephens is so good. I liked the changes they made to update the original story for modern times and the acting was incredible. It was the first thing I watched with Toby Stephens after Black Sails and wow he's a good actor, damn.

God I love this movie. Why don't I own this movie? I don't know if the actors were really having as good a time as it looked while making it but it sure looked like it. The physical humor is beautifully choreographed and Madeline Kahn's "flames on the side of my face" improv will never not be hilarious. I saw it in theaters when it was originally released and I'm sad to say I don't remember which ending my theater got but I do remember it was the first movie I was actively excited to re-watch on video because they'd announced all the endings would be available on the VHS.

I watched a lot of B/W noir films when I was teenager and those aren't really meant to be watched for content so much as they are experienced for mood, and that's exactly the mindset I fell into when I saw this in the theater. I walked out like "What just happened???" in a good way. I don't remember if I saw it a second time in the theater or waited for video but I do remember being blown away, something that doesn't usually happen for me the second time around a piece of media.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
I didn't properly appreciate the technical marvel of this film at the time and I wish I could watch it again on a big screen. Excellent writing, excellent acting, and excellent production. Just incredible, and the publicity it got for obtaining rights to use several copyrighted characters was wild. Truly a marvel of visual media that doesn't get nearly enough credit for its technological feats.

And Then There Were None is the only one I'm unfamiliar with. I love Toby Stephens, so I'm adding this miniseries to my list to check out.
Looking forward to the sequel to Knives Out, which I think is coming out this week.

eta: When I saw Knives Out in the theater, you could tell all the old school mystery lovers bc of the collective gasp/scream/laughs when the opening credits typeface flashed on the screen. Delightful.

Loved all the others (though I am due to re-watch Knives Out and LA Confidential). Also, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was one of the four or five VHS films that was in rotation in our van on family vacations, and as a result, I know the movie inside out and backwards, and I STILL love it. To this day I marvel at Bob Hoskins's performance (also, as this was the first thing I saw him in, I had no idea he was British), the absolutely pitch-perfect noir feel alongside the daffy toon characters and settings, the music, the seamlessness of the animation integration, the wordplay, the weasels, the Lizst Daffy v. Donald piano battle, Christopher Lloyd being freaking terrifying (the poor little shoe...), and yeah, just about everything about it.
