The vulnerable will fall by the wayside

The casualness with which this man, the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, speaks the phrase "the vulnerable will fall by the wayside" is horrifying but not surprising (a horror in itself).

Just like I'm not shocked, merely gutted at how many people sacrifice not just the well-being of others but also themselves by continuing to go unmasked in public, eat in restaurants, and otherwise act as happy accomplices to assault and murder. Perhaps they just see it as enjoying what little life they have left, and I suppose I can't hate them too much for that.

COVID-19 has revealed more about the current attitude of humanity than I cared to know.

When will late-stage capitalism finally reach its endgame? Will only the powerful and wealthy live to see the fall of their empires?

Last night as I was falling asleep my brain gave me a line that I could use in a story, but I have no desire to write anything so grim: Your hands are covered in blood and mine are full of tears.
