Honorary degree

I am scheduling a Ph.D. comprehensive exam for one of our students. She has a professor from India on her committee who wrote me this email last night:

Dear Professor Ash,
Date and time duly noted.
regrds,
Rxxxxxx Pxxxx (curently from London)

This morning I received an email from one of the other (local) committee members:

Lydia, FYI--in the Indian educational system, which is based on the British, someone with a title like "graduate secretary" would be a faculty member--that is, leader of the graduate faculty. So you have magically acquired a Ph.D., etc.!

From my general experience with people who have advanced degrees, I'm not sure if I should be honored or horrified.

OK! I'm occupied for the rest of the afternoon!
