OMG teh DRAMA
Good god, what a ...kerfluffle...heh. OW! Stop throwing things! OK, I won't ever ever ever use that word again, promise. Ow. *rubs head*
Who knew that such a minor gripe would cause such a mushroom cloud. Sheesh. It did make me think about some things, though, and how I interact differently with different people.
There are some friends with whom I can make some of the nastiest, crudest jokes possible with no fear that the person will misunderstand or take offense. There are some friends with whom I can exchange cutting, sometimes cruel jibes. Do I say such things to all my friends? Definitely not. And I certainly wouldn't say such things to someone I didn't know very very well. I understand that some people think you should treat everyone the same and let the real you show in any and all circumstances, but that makes me uncomfortable. I have aspects that aren't always socially acceptable. I like to occasionally indulge in humor that could hurt feelings. There are people with whom such exchanges are appropriate and there are people with whom such exchanges would be damaging. It's important to understand those boundaries, respect them, and make use of them.
The bottom line, for me, is respect. I am respectful of other human beings and I treat them politely, as adults, until I know them well enough to see where are their limits for humor, topics of discussion, etc. I expect the same in return.
