Technological help, please

Max's dad (Mike? Is that his name? Help!) gave me a DVD with some quicktime video clips from Middle Eastern weekend. I tried to copy them to my hard drive, but they won't play unless I have the DVD in the computer. What am I doing wrong?

And once I sucessfully get it on my computer, how to I cut down a long clip to just the few seconds I want? He got the Magnificent Shimmy Sequence from Saturday and I'd like to put it on my website. Do I need special software for that?

Are you sure that you're not just making a shortcut to the video clip, rather than actually copying it to the hard drive?

Yep. I did a copy and paste and there's no little arrow on the icon indicating that it's a shortcut. It's A Mystery!

YOu can use DVD shrink to make sure your DVD gets backed up to your computer correctly. It is free. http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

You'll have to have Quicktime Pro, you can save clips, but that isn't free. You could also see if you have Windows Movie Maker. It comes with Windows XP sp2, although I don't know if it will edit Quicktime files. You may be able to play the DVD and capture the piece that you want--that is what I did with Ada's video.

Try FTPing the files to your site, and let me know when they're up. I will make them into happy streaming video, and put them back up in a format you can use.
