Tuesday, this and that

Rosa Parks died yesterday. I wish I could find a copy of Sarah Vowell's essay on Rosa Parks (from her book The Partly Cloudy Patriot), but I can't find one online.

I don't know why something is pissing me off so much, but it is. In a recent locked post, one of my flisters mentioned that her hairdresser said she was "too old" for the hairstyle she wanted. OK, one, what the fuck is "too old" for a hairstyle? And two, what kind of lame ass, self important, sorry excuse for a Service Professional lays down her personal judgement on something that a Paying Customer requests? Just because you're a (oooh la fucking la) Stylist doesn't mean you have to be a Asshole, asshole.

[livejournal.com profile] kansas_dave posted the website to Drinking Liberally. I've never heard of it, but apparently we have a Lawrence chapter. Boozy Democrats, unite!

[livejournal.com profile] rougewench mentioned it on her LJ, and I'll add my voice: Lawrence folks, do try to support Ruichi Indian Restaurant. I went there for lunch a few days ago and really, I thought their food was better than India Palace (near blasphemy, I know). But seriously, the different foods were spiced more, and differently. It didn't taste like the same spices were just used in varying amounts across the different dishes. It seemed less Americanized. And wow, their halwa? *Snarf* EDIT: Ruichi has, for the time being, a dinner buffet as well as the lunch buffet!

Hm. I see I'm mostly content-free again, today. Damn.

I soooooo need to get over to Lawrence, if only to try out Ruichi's :)!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes!!!! That'd be lovely!

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have to agree with you, Ruchi's food was spiced "differently", and it was a very pleasant difference.

I would also agree with you about the hairdresser. The appropriate thing might have been to say "I don't think the hairstyle would suit you or look attractive on you"...but too old? What a bunch of crap! Argh!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
An hour later and it's *still* bugging me. Grrrr. My stylist isn't taking any new customers. Is yours?

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that Mark limits his customer base, although he is difficult to get into for evening appointments (in that you have to book about 8 weeks in advance for them). I also know that he's leaving in 4 weeks to go to Hawaii for a vacation.

So if she can work around that and she wants to call she should...The salon is MARX located at 801 Massachusetts, above Round Corner Drugs downtown. The number is (785) 843-3034. If you'd like you can have your friend say I recommended him to her.

I'll do that. What's he charge for a cut? She's a grad student, so that might be a factor...

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
$35.00 for shampoo and cut.

And how much does mango lassi at the buffet rock?

Harold, for whatever reason, didn't like Ruchi. I liked it a lot.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, unlimited Mango Lassi is a beautiful thing...

One wonders at your definition of 'content'. ;)

yeah...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2005-10-25 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I like intimate thoughts as well as great ones. I'm just having the pleasure of getting to know [livejournal.com profile] chernobylred, so candid snaps are as useful (& usually as interesting) as full psych profiles. ;-)

Re: yeah...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww. Thanks. =)

Re: yeah...

[identity profile] solan-t.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I was trying to imply that her definition of 'content' was at least a touch stricter than mine and I wasn't seeing a lack thereof.

I seem to be communicating badly this morning. I got that, & was trying to agree in my own clumsy way by commenting that "content" doesn't have to be larger than life to be interesting or worth noting. Sorry....

Re: yeah...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
'Sokay. I got it! =)

Re: yeah...

[identity profile] solan-t.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
'Sall right. ;) Just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! I'm not a terribly deep person and I just don't have much to put here what I would consider Real Journal content: self-reflection, thoughts on life, etc. I even hesitate to post too much about politics, not because I'm worried about reactions--I already had one person unfriend me for what I believe to be partly political reasons (oh well!)--but because it's just all too damn depressing. It's all I can do to keep writing my congresspersons, etc. I don't want to talk about it here, ya know?

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
We still love reading whatever you care to post.

hmmm.....
( I think you underestimate your depth, presuming you are not just being humble.)

[identity profile] emeder.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only ever tried Indian food once. We were in Norman, I think, and we out to eat w/the Rogues of Scotland. I have to say, it was a pretty awful experience. The food I got I was not able to make myself eat, so I went the night without supper. Think I should try again?

[identity profile] solan-t.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Try a buffet, that way you have a chance to sample lots of different things and are more likely to find something you like.

[identity profile] emeder.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a great idea. Is the restaurant in Lawrence a buffet, or do you know any good ones?

[identity profile] solan-t.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, both India Palace and Ruichi have lunch buffets. I have never seen a dinner buffer, however.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruichi has a dinner buffet, at least for the time being.

[identity profile] solan-t.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That is good to know!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruichi has a lunch *and* a dinner buffet.

[identity profile] emeder.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Where is that located?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically, 15th and Kasold. It's in a multi-building strip mall.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people just don't like certain foods. I'd hate to suggest you try it again and then have a rotten experience. What sort of ethic foods do you enjoy? If you like Middle Eastern and Ethiopian foods, it's possible you just found a poor restaurant. But if you're not a fan of heavily spiced and/or rich foods, Indian cuisine might not be for you.

[livejournal.com profile] solan_t's idea of the buffet is a good one.

[identity profile] emeder.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it might've been more of a texture thing, though there certainly wasn't much taste to it either. Ick. I like Chinese, Italian, Mexican for sure, so spices are no problem for me.*grin* I'd like to try Thai as well, but haven't really had a good chance yet.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the texture can be a little off-putting. Most of the lentil and vegetable dishes can be pretty soupy. I love that, but I know it's not everyone's bag. Ruichi, however, does some excellent dry stuff (including a lovely Chicken Tikka) and their Tandoori Chicken is delicious.

And as for Thai, Lawrence has that covered, too. You need to come in for dinner sometime!!!

[identity profile] emeder.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind soupy. I was minding the squishy fish-like quality it had.*chuckle* Those two dishes sound pretty good.

Yeah, we should totally do dinner in Lawrence together! I'd like some more away-from-faire time with you.:)

[identity profile] acommonreader.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I read to see if anyone else had offered -- I have the Vowell book, and will try to bring it tomorrow for illegal-happy-love-warm-goodheart-copying in the English Dept office.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Grrr. the stylist thing.
did I ever tell you about the woman at Hair Experts who refused to cut my hair the way I wanted and, I quote, told me "it will look like shit"??!!
I was stunned to say the least, and did write a letter to the manager explaining why I'd never step foot in their salon again.

And what sort of style would one be too old for, really? I can only think of one...
Two high ponytails on each side of the head might look a bit silly for everyday on a woman of a certain age, but then again, I've worn them when I came back from SF. Gawd, I think older women who dare to break the rules of hair styling are to be commended.
Phoeey on some hair stylists, some of them are such egotists.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I do remember that. What an asshat.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I would have gotten up out the chair, flipped the bastard off and walked.

Say, lunch next Thursday (Nov. 3)? My treat.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a date, then. Can you pick me up at the usual spot behind Strong? And remind me what time? I don't remember...11:30 or closer to noon?

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
11:30 will work fine for me!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-10-25 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool. See you then!

Rock!!! Thank you!

[identity profile] geekmom.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
My mom's hairdresser told her that her hairstyle made her look old, so I guess add one to that count. Her hairstyle is pretty much like mine.
