Hum a few bars and I'll fake it
So, to follow up on the previous post, I'm on the hunt for new music to provide my soundtrack this winter.
Please comment with a CD you'd recommend, along with why you think I'd like it. I'm open to all sorts of musical styles with the exceptions of gangsta rap, modern jazz (i.e. anything after, oh, 1935), modern country, and Sousa-esque marching music.
Thanks, all!

George Winston
Chantaclear
Bobby McFerrin
...and the list goes on. I'll put some more thought to this, and burn you a CD. Same goes for you, too...you and I more than likely have very similar tastes in music; meaning the list is wide and varied. :0)

But I've always found when people make me compilations of things I wasn't sure about, I always find one or two gems I really enjoy.

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (The new full live concert)
Willie Nelson - Teatro (Just trust me on this one.)

Hee, hee. Willie Nelson deserves a lot more respect in the music industry. I'll note that as well. Thanks!

Air, Moon Safari- (Smooth, Gallic synth-pop. All the benefits of dating a French person [accent, whimsical use of idiom... what is a Cherry Blossom Girl, anyway?] without having to put up with the smoking and the animosity from your friends.)
Willie Nelson, Countryman (Willie does reggae... no, really.)
Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine (Because we all owe Fiona so much, and because it's not as crunked up as I thought initially)
RJD2, Deadringer (Because everyone needs an urban soundtrack, and RJD2's pretty much the guy to beat)
The Game, The Documentary (Although you said "No gangsta rap," his work has an astounding amount of epic scope and grandeur. Listen to the song "Church for Thugs" before you write it off)
Madvillain, Madvillainy (alt-hip hop; outstanding use of samples and lyrical cunning)
Al Green, Greatest Hits (because everyone needs Al Green on occasion)
Loveage, Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By (Combine quirky lounge, top-flight performances from Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields and Mike Patton of Fantomas/Mr. Bungle/Faith No More and the truly mad production skillz of San Francisco's Dan the Automator and you get what may very well be the sexiest album of all time)
Dan the Automator, Wanna Buy A Monkey? (Compilation of Dan's work from his earliest days producing for Brand Nubian to his current run... it's an instant party on a CD. If I throw a party, I'll put that, Loveage and London Calling in and walk away, secure in my music choice)
Coldplay, X&Y (Because you need to be able to talk with other people about what you listen to, and blank stares at "RJD2" or "The new Willie Nelson reggae album" get old. And, really, it's serviceable pop music.)
Alternately, I can whip something up for you.

I gotta get that one.
Also I'd recommend the latest Audioslave, good hard driving Soundgarden meets Rage Against the Machine. The new Stones ablum is good as well. Liz Phair has a new one out that supposedly goes back to the indy and fades a little from the smash hit formula of the last album, but I haven't heard it yet. Trent does what he does best making his latest NIN With_Teeth sound like an updates Pretty Hate Machine.
From the sdemory recommeded list check out the Kleptones. http://www.kleptones.com Some really fun mashups there and you get it all off of the Interweb.

And I'll consider Audioslave. I'm not a big Soundgarden fan, but I do like most of what I've heard of Rage Against the Machine.

Soundtracks are always good. It's like a mix tape, only made by professionals. =)

Boru's Ghost; "Shadows of Time" (they're friends from OKC and do wonderful plugged in Celtic)
Liz Carroll/John Doyle; "In Play" (the fiddler and guitarist I was raving about from this past weekend - amazing instrumentals doesn't begin to cover it. This CD is all original work.)
Beyond the Pale; "Queen of Skye" (more friends from O'Flaherty's this weekend; lush harmonies and wonderful instrumentals, some trads & some original)

If you haven't already been introduced...
It will change your life.
I could list more suggestions, but really, this is it.

Bond-Born I was a bit skeptical at first since I am not generally a fan of instrumental music (unless it's Yo-Yo Ma) but this CD is excellent! All the songs are instrumental, but have a wonderful (and more importantly well done) mondern element to them. They're all very upbeat so it's something you can listen to without the fear of falling asleep. Try it, I'm pretty sure you'll like it.
Just one
It's hip-hop, but it's beyond hip-hop. I dare you to listen to "The Woman with the Tattooed Hands" and not sway.

What are you into? Not knowing your tastes 100%, I'd recommend a few bluesy standards I love. While they can be a bit moody, I love the always underrated Chris Isaak ("Forever Blue" & "Wicked Game" are standouts) and Morphine ("Cure For Pain" or "The Night"). Let me know of a few bands you're fond of and I might have some ideas . . .

=D I've been waiting for my office mate to be out for an afternoon so I can listen to those. I don't have an internet connection at home. =(

We should make a group outing to the opening or matinee.
Pull out a James Brown compilation... guaranteed to run away the blues.

"Thud" by Kevin Gilbert

and enjoy them muchly. I'd be happy to burn and send if you like, perhaps as an exchange
for some stuff I don't have. I do enjoy rockabilly, but don't really have any in my collection.
Re: these may not be your cuppa...
ok, couple more..
..not that I've had ANY reason to use it. Bleh.
The White Stripes: Both Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan, (the new one) are wonderful. I heart Jack White. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/artist/glance/-/219981/ref=m_art_dp/103-9237531-7355849)
The Verve Remixed Series (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/103-9237531-7355849) Sounds blasphemous, but they're groovilicious.
Scissor Sisters (http://www.scissorsisters.com/) SO fun.
All right, I'll quit now. Hope you're well!
