Hum a few bars and I'll fake it

So, to follow up on the previous post, I'm on the hunt for new music to provide my soundtrack this winter.

Please comment with a CD you'd recommend, along with why you think I'd like it. I'm open to all sorts of musical styles with the exceptions of gangsta rap, modern jazz (i.e. anything after, oh, 1935), modern country, and Sousa-esque marching music.

Thanks, all!

[identity profile] thefox-rb.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OH, the songs start FLYING through my head...

George Winston
Chantaclear
Bobby McFerrin

...and the list goes on. I'll put some more thought to this, and burn you a CD. Same goes for you, too...you and I more than likely have very similar tastes in music; meaning the list is wide and varied. :0)

R.

I'd love a mix CD! Thanks! I will offer the same, but I'm not sure how to work the DVD burner I have here at work.

[identity profile] iron-clad.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe I have just the thing. I shal get need you address and I will burn a plethera of things for you. Keep what you want, cancel at any time.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool! Thanks. [livejournal.com profile] breathofgold has my mailing address on the Whore Contact Sheet.

[identity profile] iron-clad.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Kick ass. You do like Rammstien don't you?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm...Well, at least not more than one song at a time. =) I'm not anti hard thrashy stuff, but I'm not a huge fan, either. My tastes in techo run more to the Future Sound of London and my punk is a lot more old school Ramones and The Clash.

But I've always found when people make me compilations of things I wasn't sure about, I always find one or two gems I really enjoy.

[identity profile] iron-clad.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Let the mixing begin!

[identity profile] arian1.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Gypsy Kings - Cantos de Amore
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (The new full live concert)
Willie Nelson - Teatro (Just trust me on this one.)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been meaning to check out the Gypsy Kings...and hey! I already have that Talking Heads album. It's excellent, yes.

Hee, hee. Willie Nelson deserves a lot more respect in the music industry. I'll note that as well. Thanks!

[identity profile] arian1.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayup!

[identity profile] lightonthesill.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oohhhhhh.... Willie Nelson - Teatro - I can soooo vouch for this one. I LOVE this CD - and haven't listened to it in a while - need to dig it out.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll give you a few:

Air, Moon Safari- (Smooth, Gallic synth-pop. All the benefits of dating a French person [accent, whimsical use of idiom... what is a Cherry Blossom Girl, anyway?] without having to put up with the smoking and the animosity from your friends.)

Willie Nelson, Countryman (Willie does reggae... no, really.)

Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine (Because we all owe Fiona so much, and because it's not as crunked up as I thought initially)

RJD2, Deadringer (Because everyone needs an urban soundtrack, and RJD2's pretty much the guy to beat)

The Game, The Documentary (Although you said "No gangsta rap," his work has an astounding amount of epic scope and grandeur. Listen to the song "Church for Thugs" before you write it off)

Madvillain, Madvillainy (alt-hip hop; outstanding use of samples and lyrical cunning)

Al Green, Greatest Hits (because everyone needs Al Green on occasion)

Loveage, Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By (Combine quirky lounge, top-flight performances from Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields and Mike Patton of Fantomas/Mr. Bungle/Faith No More and the truly mad production skillz of San Francisco's Dan the Automator and you get what may very well be the sexiest album of all time)

Dan the Automator, Wanna Buy A Monkey? (Compilation of Dan's work from his earliest days producing for Brand Nubian to his current run... it's an instant party on a CD. If I throw a party, I'll put that, Loveage and London Calling in and walk away, secure in my music choice)

Coldplay, X&Y (Because you need to be able to talk with other people about what you listen to, and blank stares at "RJD2" or "The new Willie Nelson reggae album" get old. And, really, it's serviceable pop music.)

Alternately, I can whip something up for you.

[identity profile] rorschachsix.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Loveage, Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By ...

I gotta get that one.

Also I'd recommend the latest Audioslave, good hard driving Soundgarden meets Rage Against the Machine. The new Stones ablum is good as well. Liz Phair has a new one out that supposedly goes back to the indy and fades a little from the smash hit formula of the last album, but I haven't heard it yet. Trent does what he does best making his latest NIN With_Teeth sound like an updates Pretty Hate Machine.

From the sdemory recommeded list check out the Kleptones. http://www.kleptones.com Some really fun mashups there and you get it all off of the Interweb.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard good things about With_Teeth.

And I'll consider Audioslave. I'm not a big Soundgarden fan, but I do like most of what I've heard of Rage Against the Machine.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll dig the hell out of Loveage. Only version of "Sex (I'm A)" that I've ever liked, and it's got hipster cred to spare.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Gah. Yeah, that song gives me fucking hives. Hate it. I have to admit some sort of morbid fascination with a version that you would actually like.

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard to put into words... you'll have to hear it. It brings the sexay in steamer trunks and packing crates, though.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Put it on the CD, baby. I'm all ears.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew I could count on you. Feel free to make a comp CD for me! That'd give me some motivation to come up and see ya sometime, too. =)

[identity profile] sdemory.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Done and done. We'll have to figure out a way to make the drop at some point. I've got a cunning idea or two.

[identity profile] curieuse.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ben Folds - Rockin the Suburbs still makes me feel soundtracky. The "Closer" soundtrack is also an incredible mix.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The "Closer" soundtrack is also an incredible mix.
Soundtracks are always good. It's like a mix tape, only made by professionals. =)

[identity profile] rowangolightly.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you know what my leaning it, so here's some Celtic you may not be familiar with...

Boru's Ghost; "Shadows of Time" (they're friends from OKC and do wonderful plugged in Celtic)
Liz Carroll/John Doyle; "In Play" (the fiddler and guitarist I was raving about from this past weekend - amazing instrumentals doesn't begin to cover it. This CD is all original work.)
Beyond the Pale; "Queen of Skye" (more friends from O'Flaherty's this weekend; lush harmonies and wonderful instrumentals, some trads & some original)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo. New instrumental stuff is high on my priority list at the moment. Thanks.

Instrumental - Liz Story piano and Segovia guitar

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the name of the album? I tried "Liz Story Instrumental" on amazon and didn't get anything.

Liz Story - Solid Color (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?path=ASIN/B000000NFE&link_code=as2&camp=1789&tag=starstraf&creative=9325) (She is instrumental, that isn't the name of an album)

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool. Thanks!

If you haven't already been introduced...

[identity profile] subplot2.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane over the Sea

It will change your life.

I could list more suggestions, but really, this is it.

Re: If you haven't already been introduced...

[identity profile] normalcyispasse.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, great suggestion!

[identity profile] amnesiacat.livejournal.com 2005-11-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You may be familiar with this already but I REALLY enjoy

Bond-Born I was a bit skeptical at first since I am not generally a fan of instrumental music (unless it's Yo-Yo Ma) but this CD is excellent! All the songs are instrumental, but have a wonderful (and more importantly well done) mondern element to them. They're all very upbeat so it's something you can listen to without the fear of falling asleep. Try it, I'm pretty sure you'll like it.

Just one

[identity profile] normalcyispasse.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Atmosphere's Lucy Ford album

It's hip-hop, but it's beyond hip-hop. I dare you to listen to "The Woman with the Tattooed Hands" and not sway.

[identity profile] acommonreader.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
The Books - Lost and Safe (label - Tomlab) is my favorite new CD, and is a recent release. I consider their combination of sounds INTELLIGENT and interesting.

[identity profile] jjgalahad.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sheesh, free songs (http://www.livejournal.com/users/jjgalahad/137438.html#cutid1) just aren't enough for some people. :P

What are you into? Not knowing your tastes 100%, I'd recommend a few bluesy standards I love. While they can be a bit moody, I love the always underrated Chris Isaak ("Forever Blue" & "Wicked Game" are standouts) and Morphine ("Cure For Pain" or "The Night"). Let me know of a few bands you're fond of and I might have some ideas . . .

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
free songs just aren't enough for some people

=D I've been waiting for my office mate to be out for an afternoon so I can listen to those. I don't have an internet connection at home. =(

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking that there has to be a soundtrack to the upcoming Walk the Line movie, and you'd love it because I'll love it.
We should make a group outing to the opening or matinee.

Pull out a James Brown compilation... guaranteed to run away the blues.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have the blues, just wanting some fresh new music...

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
*grin*... just for future reference, let's say.

[identity profile] redheadfae.livejournal.com 2005-11-04 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
oh ps, I don't normally care for her, but just heard Alanis Morrisette covering "Crazy" (Seal, not Patsy) and I liked it a lot.

"Thud" by Kevin Gilbert

[personal profile] themadblonde 2005-11-03 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my fave little-known artists. Brilliant lyricist, good arranger, original music yet very catchy. Died tragically young, so FAR too little of his music exists.

these may not be your cuppa...

[identity profile] green-tara76.livejournal.com 2005-11-11 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I just acquired albums by these ladies:

http://www.theagilmore.com/

http://www.thedittybops.com/

and enjoy them muchly. I'd be happy to burn and send if you like, perhaps as an exchange
for some stuff I don't have. I do enjoy rockabilly, but don't really have any in my collection.

Re: these may not be your cuppa...

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-11 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be happy to trade you a mix CD but right now I don't have a way to burn CDs. Boo. I really need to fix that.

ok, couple more..

[identity profile] green-tara76.livejournal.com 2005-11-11 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Take It Off! Striptease Classics (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000033ZA/103-9237531-7355849?v=glance)
..not that I've had ANY reason to use it. Bleh.

The White Stripes: Both Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan, (the new one) are wonderful. I heart Jack White. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/artist/glance/-/219981/ref=m_art_dp/103-9237531-7355849)

The Verve Remixed Series (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/103-9237531-7355849) Sounds blasphemous, but they're groovilicious.

Scissor Sisters (http://www.scissorsisters.com/) SO fun.

All right, I'll quit now. Hope you're well!

Re: ok, couple more..

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2005-11-11 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard lots of good things about Scissor Sisters.

[identity profile] green-tara76.livejournal.com 2005-11-11 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a prob, If you want them, I'll send them.
