Mommy, is it Spring yet?

Wooo! Check out my new animated icon, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] adammaker!

Is anyone here a member of the Friends of the Public Library? The Library Book Sale is coming up and Members' night is Thursday, March 30, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There are only two Mary Stewart novels that I don't have in hardback, and if you could check the shelves on members' night for them, I'd really appreciate it. They are: Wildfire at Midnight, and Nine Coaches Waiting. I don't care about dust jackets or super nice condition. I just want a decent hardback copy that will stand up to repeated readings.

I will only say this about the current weather conditions in Larryville. Told you. Bleh.

Also "Thanks" to Adam: "When Spring officially begins, at 12:26 p.m. today, the rain will be changing over to sleet. By 4 p.m., the sleet will change over to snow. The National Weather Service has placed Douglas County in a winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Tuesday. The weather service is expecting east winds today at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts to around 40 mph."

One nice thing about being alone and single is that on Saturday nights I get to listen to KANU's Saturday night programming. Namely, The Retro Cocktail Hour and A Night on the Town. Both shows can be hit or miss with me, but the past couple Saturdays have been definite hits. This latest Saturday reminded me that not all women on modern Broadway suck. I have a bias against the emphasis on the flat, nasal tones trained into most American female singers--sets my teeth on edge. It's why most of my showtunes collection is either from movie versions or London casts. But I'm going to hunt on amazon and half.com for a cheap copy of Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette Peters. The version George Harder played of "They Say It's Wonderful" would be worth the price of a used CD, alone. I wish he'd played "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from Peter's revival of Gypsy, too. I would like to hear more than the 30 second clip on Amazon.

This is one instance where I would appreciate a service like iTunes. I'd love to pull my own version of a soundtrack together. For example, I love Cumming's M.C. in the Cabaret revival, but Natasha Richardson has all the qualities of the modern Broadway female that drive me nuts. And really, who could do Sally better than Liza Minnelli? Similarly, I love most of the cast in the movie version of Chicago, but there are a few songs ("Cell Block Tango", most notably)that are much better on the revival cast album--but then, on the revival cast, I don't like Ann Reinking at all. I'd like to make a mish-mash soundtrack that uses both recordings. I'd also like to pick and choose songs. There are some musicals that only have one or two songs that appeal to me, like "Til There Was You" from The Music Man, while nearly every other song makes me cringe. Hm. Something to look into, I suppose. Although I think most of those services only provide MP3 format, correct? So that doesn't really help me since I don't have anything to play them on at home. Anyway. Oh well.

I need to start painting my nails or something. Stress and sadness the past couple weeks have taken a toll on my cuticles. And I was doing so well there for a while...

Nope--iTunes is in their own format -- a protected AAC. You can play it with iTunes (I'm not in the loop as to other players that support iTunes AAC files anyhow) or burn it as an audio CD. Once it is an audio CD, you are set, you can rip it and convert to your preferred format.

Hm. So I need to download it, then burn it to CD, then copy it in standard audio format? Sounds like a little more work than I want to deal with at the moment... Rats.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2006-03-20 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, you need to download your songs, create a playlist with said songs that will fit to a CD, and then burn it to a CD using iTunes(if you work machine has a CD burner). Then, if your CD player at home will play CD +/- RW, you are done.

OK that doesn't sound too bad. Perhaps I'll look into it. Thanks!

Does Nero work for this, or is that something altogether different?
I saw a copy that Jordan left behind in the desk drawer.

It just occurred to me that I might not be able to do this since I can't install stuff on my computer here...somehow I don't think they'll install Nero or iTunes software on my work computer. =b

Nero will let you burn to CD what you already have on the hard drive.

[identity profile] stuology.livejournal.com 2006-03-20 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that Nero will recognize iTunes .m4p files -- it uses .m4a (the unprotected AAC file format) and there was a problem even with iTunes playing Nero's ripped .m4a without a hack. So, um, it may take the files and burn it to a CD, but it will not solve [livejournal.com profile] chernobylreds problem of needing in an audio CD format. Conversion probably equals "no" without a lot of hacking.

iTunes uses a Rights Protected file format, so I don't think that Nero will recognize it to convert it to an audio cd without some hacking.

Yay for more music.
I think I need to make another run to the public library to see what they have in the CD piles.

I get mine at Walgreens in the footsie section.
2-3 bucks, damn fine for elbows and knees too.

Good call on the library...I don't know why I hadn't thought of that. I used to check out soundtracks from the library all the time! Got out of the habit, I guess.

I'll check out the lotion you recommend. However, no unguent in any measure is going to help my hands if I don't stop picking at them non-stop.

I'll try to remember on the books, what is your max price?

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-03-20 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they don't bother to mark things any higher than $5 and I'm fine with that.

THANK YOU!!!! I can make it on Friday and Saturday morning, but since I'm not a member, I can't go to the Thursday night sale.
