Closing the weekend on a sad note

This afternoon I called several of the accepted applicants who have not confirmed their enrollment status for Fall 2006. One of the calls was answered by a woman who, when I asked for the student, paused and informed me that he would not be enrolling at KU because he (her son) passed away this summer.

In the background, I could hear the crying of his just-months-old baby boy.

Heartbreak.

Wow. That reminds me of what I heard today. Iraq- Two local women in a car were speeding toward a US installation and blew thru the first checkpoint after being told to stop. When they did not and were almost to the second checkpoint, US soldiers opened fire and killed both occupants,thinking it was a suicide attack. Later it was found that they were not suicide bombers but a pregnant woman in labor and her sister trying to get her to a hospital in time. My heart goes out to all who were involved and to the souls of the lost. War is hell.
