I need a twelve-step program for furniture

My first question of the day:

How do I remove this fucking hideous Navigation Bar from the top of my Friends Page view? I got it off my main page view, but how often do I look at my own LJ page? I had to restart the computer. *shrug* I really like your ideas and options, Live Journal. Please don't make me hate you.

Note the snazzy new icon, photo courtesy John Bloomer. This was taken at that same February photo shoot as yesterday's photos.

Those of you who know my love of collecting ratty, cast-off chairs may laugh, groan, or cheer at the following news: I am adopting another orphan. The wretched green chair that sits opposite my office desk was slated for the garbage bin today. But I said I'll take it home. It's really a beautiful old late-60s chair with a graceful wooden frame. The upholstery, although unworn, is ugly. And it desperately needs re-padding. But the lines! The lines! So chalk up another on the long list of my mismatched chairs in need of refinishing. But I just couldn't let it go to the dump.

All the way to the right of the nav bar should be a link to configure/remove. Click it and then there are TWO checkboxes about midway down. Make sure they are both unchecked. One is for your main page, the other your friends page.

Yes, I unchecked them both, and it's still there. Hence my frustration.

huh. that just worked for me... weird.

can't wait to see the new chair. Hey, maybe you need a new hobby: apholstery!

*runs and hides*

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to restart the computer and see if that works. Shoulda tried that in the first place.

You know? I've thought about trying my hand at upholstery but some of it requires specialty tools. And frankly, I'd rather be buying specialty tools for costuming... =D

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You did it!
You resisted adding another hobby!
*grin*

[identity profile] arkhamrefugee.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's no MY fault that years of tech support ingrained in me the desire to start with the basics! ;-) Don't shoot the would-be messenger, please!

PS - I love the icon. :)

Thank you! I'm pleased with it. I like the font on SIN, especially.

It's good stuff, that's for sure!

Chairs

I know what you mean. I rescued an old wooden conference chair from Murphy Hall when they remodeled one of the rooms, and I have an old wooden rocking chair frame that my grandfather re-finished for me, on the condition that I do the re-upholstering myself from the springs out. We should have a chair recovery day! :)

=) See my comment to [livejournal.com profile] everflame on doing my own upholstery work. I'll pay Johnson County Upholstery (the folks who did my fab couch) to do my dirty work on that. It's just not something I'm interested enough in doing on my own.

That's what I should do with the extra money. A rocking chair that my grandmother bought for me years ago. I love the chair, but the upholstery? Well, I'll just say that it would look great in my grandmother's overly pink, butterfly and hummingbird encrusted interior. My house? Not so much.

I can't recommend Johnson County Upholstery enough. They're not fast, but they're Really Good.

Yep. They did that couch. They're amazing.

Makes good sense. I will keep them in mind for when we have the dough to get our Ethan Allen couch re-done - the cats have been using it as a scratching post. Boo. :( My rocking chair doesn't need the specialty tools, though. I took the orginal upholstery off myself, and it was done with staples and decorative nails. I think I can handle a staple gun and a hammer. :)

Did you try unchecking the two option boxes on this page: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/

Oh, and sometimes with LJ, I have to refresh by reloading via the F5 key. Logging out and back in still pulls pages from cache for me.

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, it might be time to manually clear the Cache, too.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm. Thanks for the reminder. I haven't cleared my cache in a while. It's probably due.

Fantastic is the Icon.

you know, of course, that i too am a collector of chairs and am picking up yet another this weekend - 1940's in desperate need of new springs and upholstery. yes, i'm the kinda girl that has her upholsterer on her cell phone

it should be noted that i have not even one more inch of space for said chair. i haven't the foggiest notion of where i will put it.

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-07-12 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Solidarity, sister!!!!

I have my chairs stacked two deep in my living room. You cannot sit in half the chairs in my apartment because there simply isn't enough room to spread them all out.

Fabulous, tres sexy icon.

Good for you for rescuing cool furniture.
