Calling a stop

OK. I must stop buying CDs. I have a tendency to spend money when I'm stressed/blue, and I love music, so what better combo than spending money on CDs? But holy crap, it's getting out of hand. This month I bought:
  • Chill Out Bombay
  • Hank Williams III first CD
  • Bhangra Fever
  • Kinky, first album
  • Deke's latest--The Melody
  • Little Rachel
  • SCOTS Mojo Box
  • Propellerheads Decksanddrumsandrockandroll
    then today
  • Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi
  • Cigar Store Indians first CD
  • Sun Kings box set
  • Big Barn Combo

    That's crazy. Crazy.

Now, granted, four of those are ones I'm finally replacing after splitting up the CDs with [livejournal.com profile] 0verdrive. But still. Crazy. I don't have this money to spend. And yet...when I put in a new CD, or a CD I haven't heard for years, it makes me so happy. I'm feeling particulary pleased at the Sun Kings boxed set. I scored it used on amazon for under $6. I got it the first time free for doing promotional work for Rhino Records. I'm not sure how [livejournal.com profile] 0verdrive wound up with it, but I wasn't in the best place back then and he kept a lot of the rockabilly stuff that maybe I shoulda fought harder for. Oh well. Moving on.

Speaking of moving on, I should probably be moving on myself to the (admittedly small) pile of crap in my inbox...can I help it if I don't feel like doing a lick of work today?

    Hank Williams III first CD

I feel stupid asking if it is good because I also assume if it wasn't, you wouldn't buy it.

    Hank Williams - thumbs up
Hank Williams, Jr - no thank-you, I'll pass

So, I haven't given the next generation a try.

Is it a style born from old country/no depression bands? Or is it a style born out of country from the 70's on--including that "Young Country" crap?

I find that while I pretty much abhor "Modern Country" like icepicks in the eyes, older..."original" country is pretty nice.

Hank III is old-school jail-blues twang. It's excellent. Feel free to borrow it sometime if you like. IMO, this CD has the best version of Cocaine Blues I've ever heard. Hands down.

Check out [livejournal.com profile] puddlediving, she has the CD exchange links posted. I think I'm gonna try that instead of selling mine to Hastings.

I don't wanna work either. I missed having a non-testosterone time yesterday. Boo hiss on bad weather.

Interesting. I'll keep an eye on that for her reviews. I don't sell to Hastings, though. Just Lovegarden.

    Oh!
thanks for telling me, I didn't know LoveGarden did CDs.

Sort of a six-degrees-of-separation thing, but I watched the DVDof Spike Lee's "Inside Man" last night, and it opened with a killer bollypop track listed on the CD as "Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint - Written by A.R. Rahman, Gulzar, Panjabi MC" that you would really dig. The whole score (and the film itself!) was mighty fine, so I may have to pick it up.

Not trying to get you to add another thing to the shopping list, just sayin'. ;) I also went on a tear a few months back, and again when Barbe got me the 30GB Zen. Not my fault, I just *had* to fill it up with tunage!

    Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint

Yup, I've heard that song. It's fabulous! I think a friend of mine might have that CD...[livejournal.com profile] gmskarka, you online today?

And hey, it's good to know I'm not the only fool who spends waaaaay too much on CDs. It's also good to know I'm not the only person with Bollywood tunes sharing a shelf with Carl Perkins and Social Distortion.

I just had someone reccommend Kinky to me, but I've never heard them. They also recc'd Calexico, and I ended up loving that..

    How's Kinky?

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it. They've got a good mix of modern Bossa Nova, peppy dance beat, and ... something else.

Here's a few samples. Lemme know when you've had a chance to listen and I'll take them down.

  • Más (http://www.chernobylred.com/kinky/Mas.mp3) (Probably their best known one)
  • Mirando De Lado (http://www.chernobylred.com/kinky/MirandoDeLado.mp3)
  • Tonos Rosas (http://www.chernobylred.com/kinky/TonosRosas.mp3)
  • [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-12-04 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope you had the weekend to listen to them! I'm taking them down now.

I might have to check that out. I have this weird issue with downloading music. I do not know why, so don't ask me. It's not like the artists see a penny of the money when I buy used CDs...

What more nudging do you need? I thought I already beat you over the head with a club in regards to the spy music one...

Hey, did you like the rockabilly alt country mix?

    [identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
For my part, I pledge to make you a mix-cd-rom during winterbreak.

    Thank you!

well, What I would do is just copy them and resell them-or trade them in for other cds at the record store. I do nearly all MP3's now, saves space and $$. I will buy CDs from smaller bands, and move them along-=unless they have the kinky autographs LOL

    [identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-12-01 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, I the only MP3 player I have is in my car. =b
