Tasty NEWS FLASH

I stopped by Checker's grocery store last night and was pleased as punch to see they were carring Indian Trail Cranberry Orange relish, at least for the duration of the holiday season. People, let me tell you: If you are a fan of tart cranberry relish, this stuff is the bomb. I'm going back this evening to stock up. The carton has directions for thawing, so I assume it freezes ok.

As far as I know, this stuff is usually only sold in the Chicago area--although my mom can get it in Indianapolis. But I've never seen it in this part of the U.S. Go encourage Checker's to carry it regularly!

The package has a fifty-cent coupon on the inside, so you can always go buy one (it's $1.99 for a 10 oz. package) and get another one the next day with your coupon.

Anyway, I'm just now getting around to eating my breakfast (*cough*). So I'm chowing down on my yo-cheese/cranberry relish combo with Grape Nuts and thought I really should share the news.

Go! Buy! Cranberry! Relish!

Aha. I'm in Lawrence tomorrow afternoon... I should remember that.

You'll have to give me hints of what to do with stuff like that.
You know, being Brit-raised, I have no idea about relishes, dipping sauces and the like. ;)

OK, well, for a start, you can do what I do and mix it with yo-cheese as a topping for Wasa crackers or mixed with a crunchy cereal of your choice.

You can also mix it with melted butter and warm syrup for a really decadent pancake topping.

You can also make a really stellar sweet cheese ball with a 1/4 c of the relish, 1/4 c crushed pineapple, and one 8 oz. package of cream cheese--mix all well, form into a ball and roll in chopped pecans.

So there you go for a start. And of course there's always the option of just sticking a spoon in the carton for an afternoon pick-me-up.

Sounds yummy! Especially the pancake topping--I never thought of that! I make my own cranberry relish for Thanksgiving but it's not super-tart. I cook the berries with (some) sugar and water until they pop and the syrup jells. I like to grate orange peel into it, but this year I forgot to get an orange, so I put bitter orange marmelade into it. It never lasts more than a couple of days, because people like to eat it with a spoon and also as topping for the leftover sweet potato rolls.

MMM. I love marmelades! Bitter foods rock.

Hm. I don't suppose you'd be willing to share that recipe for sweet potato rolls?

Sweeet! Literally.

What a great world it is when friends like you are around to keep the Domestically-Challenged like me informed.

Or you can be naughty and open the box at the store and buy them both at once!

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2006-12-07 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, well, since the coupon is *attached* to the box with the bar code, I think they'd notice. Not to say they'd care, of course...

RAts. Foiled again.

I thought it was *inside* the box.

Alas, no.

Great. I nearly drooled on myself.
