Prepare to be wrong

[livejournal.com profile] chronovore posted a clip of a man (Sir Ken Robinson) talking about how current standard educational systems kill creativity. That's not exactly a news flash, I know, but he brings up some lovely points. He chases a lot of rabbits, but he is fun to listen to and has a few wonderful insights.

If you're not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with anything creative.

Education only focuses on our heads, and even then, it favors one side.

We have strip-mined our minds the way we have strip-mined the earth, for only a few particular commodities.

Good stuff! FYI, it's about 20 minutes long.

Last night's gig at Aladdin Cafe was, without doubt, the worst I've ever done there. The audience was small, disinterested, and totally without energy. It was difficult to dance for them. All five of the dancers agreed with me that it was the deadest crowd we've ever performed for. There was no give/take. Thank gods for the two tables (one that included [livejournal.com profile] cedarsong and [livejournal.com profile] everflame) who were providing some positive response. Even the drummers were sluggish (or should that be sludge-ish, [livejournal.com profile] cedarsong?). OMG bad.

One good thing that resulted from last night's dancing was the reminder that I need a standard black costume bra to wear with my mix-n-match costumes. Something that is generically decorated, and is moderately adjustable to allow for weight/hormone fluctuations. Last night's bra was a teensy bit big, but I had nothing else to wear that would go with the fishnet. I have three distinct design ideas for new costumes, but I think that black "everything" bra should top the list. I also need to either dismantle or sell my old costumes that don't fit anymore. It's ridiculous to hold onto a bra I wore when I was a 34B.

In other news, I'm going to buy a staff membership at the KU Student Rec Center so I can go exercise in the mornings without making noise in the house. Also, I figure if I'm shelling out ~$20/month for something, I'll do it instead of just saying "eh, tomorrow."

I'd definitely recommend going to the rec center - it's awesome! Although I've gained five pounds since starting to go there regularly, it's all muscle weight, and I've dropped two pant sizes! (Hope to see you around!) :)

I'll be going in the morning (pre-coffee), so don't expect too much enthusiasm from me. =D

I'm usually there Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 7:30ish. I go pre-breakfast since that's supposedly better for working cardio, and if tummy's not happy Erica's not happy yet, so I know what you mean. :)

Ah, well I'll probably be showered and gone by the time you arrive. I plan to get there around 6:00 since I have to be at work at 8:00.

I don't get how people can be disinterested in belly dancers! Any time I get to see them, unless they are really, really bad, I'm all "woohoo! Belly dancers!"

Sorry it sucked...

Well, it takes all sorts to make the world go 'round. It's not that uncommon to have a table or two of unappreciative restaurant patrons who didn't know it was dance night and are uncomfortable with the prospect. But this was a whole restaurant full of people who were just flat uninterested.

I usually get an email about the dance nights - if I dnd't get then maybe others didn't get and that is part of the small crowds

[identity profile] clevermanka.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The crowd wasn't terribly small--all the tables in the main section and two of the three large tables in back were filled. It was just dead and weird. And yes, our usual crowd was most noticeably absent so maybe the email notice went astray.

*nods*

Yup, definitely sludge-ish.
