I have three blogs -- the political one is completely anonymous. The kalimeg LJ is for everyday opinions, and the tinablack one is for book reviews and sf-nal stuff.
Today the political blog was about Bhutto. I note that the BBC News article says she was shot in the chest and head and then fell into her car again. The bomb wet off after that and took another 20 or so victims. All the US news outlets make it sound like a bomb got her, but she actually was in a hospital by the time she died.
I remember my grandma reading newspaper articles about Bhutto and shaking her head in some combination of admiration and regret. "She's going to get herself killed one of these days," she said.
Even if I didn't always agree with all of her stances, the fact that she was a woman who led a Muslim nation is nothing short of awesome.
I got curious about that, and found it not such an unusual situation. (http://www.guide2womenleaders.com/Muslim_Leaders.htm) I also like to point that out when annoyed by listening to asshats go on about how badly women are treated in the Middle East.
I do think a lot of women are treated pretty shabbily in the Middle East. Living under the threat of having your lips cut off for wearing makeup is, IMO, pretty shitty. So is being sentenced to death for getting raped.
Whoooaaa! Nope. Wasn't meaning for it to go there at all.
I'm referring to the multitude of people who refuse to acknowledge anything of other cultural value in the Middle East and hide behind the "they treat their women like crap" as the main reason for hatred and prejudice. It's been a recent hot button for me with someone I interact with frequently. They refuse to acknowledge anything else worthwhile.

Sorry you're dealing with an actual asshat. My condolences.
