This weekend I helped out at the first Joplin Renaissance Festival. nottygypsy asked me to tag along to help as an experienced server at the Smoker and I agreed for the fun of it and maybe score a bit in tip money.

There were a few issues before departure, and I admit that by Friday afternoon I was really Not Feeling It.

I'm so very happy I went, though. I had a fantastic time with The Lord Mayor's Company (I even got some stage time!), hanging out with The Musical Blades and seeing several of their shows (they're awesome), working my ass off at Smoker, and indulging a tiny bit in some of the best faire food I've ever had. Whoa. JRF had some amazingly good food vendors. Mmmm. Even though it was ridiculously chilly on Sunday morning (and into the afternoon), it was a fabulous experience. Given the opportunity, I'd do the same thing next year.

Of course a million thanks to cedarsong and everflame for being wonderful friends and company, letting me carpool and crash in their hotel room. You are the best ever.

Right now I'm tired and allergic and feeling the effects of being out of shape. Tomorrow I get my ass back on the Nordic Track.

I went to SoCal and NoCal Ren Faire for a number of years, and even worked SoCal for one year -- but the only thing I can remember from any of it is the worst allergy attack I've ever had. Selective memory, I'm sure.

I miss the Ren Fest. Not the themed mall that I've come to think of it as, but the trip back in time and to another world that it was my first few years. I suppose you get out of it what you put into it, though. I'm glad to hear it was so fun! Maybe next Sept. we'll have more time to enjoy it.

On another note, I thought of you last night as I introduced Amanda to Farscape. I think that may have been the first time I've ever seen the very first episode...

It was delightful seeing you! I'm SO glad the food was good; that was a very high priority for the owner; I never got to have any!

The main food vendor is the Joplin restaurant, "Red, Hot and Blue" which has INCREDIBLE food if slightly slow food service, but since the owner and his best staff were out serving at JRF all day, it's not too surprising. And of course, we come in to eat with crowds of 15-20 so it's easily explained. When we went in on Saturday night after faire, Bruce said that the owner had come straight from faire to work at the restaurant. Good heavens....

Yep. We went to Red Hot & Blue for dinner, too. Absolutely wonderful. And they have Diet Dr. Pepper. Always a plus.

The past couple years have seen an influx of good new stage shows. And you'd love the Smoker, although I'm not sure how much the smoke would bother you. The beer and jokes would be All You, though.

Yay Farscape!

You know, I never did see the final movie that supposedly wrapped things up. And I think I like it better that way.
