Educational

I am officially allergic to wheat. And I don't get along so well with deep fat fried stuff now, either. At the demolition derby on Friday I shared a funnel cake with [livejournal.com profile] jamer_31, Kenna, [livejournal.com profile] mckitterick, Matt, and Nate. That's a funnel cake split six ways. I ate a piece maybe the size of my palm, immediately swelled up like a balloon, and suffered terrible nausea and stomach cramps for over twelve hours. I didn't feel 100% better until late Sunday afternoon. I'm still a little swollen/bloated in my lower abdomen.

Awful.

Mark any wheat flour/deep-fat fried combo items off my Cheat List. Permanently.

At least you know, and that is good, yes? Now you have control over the stomach issues that have been plaguing you.

It's very good to know. It's also good to have had such a horrible reaction. Because now I'm not tempted in the slightest to indulge again.

Blech. Glad you're feeling better again. Sometimes, science is messy.

Thanks. My pants are still a little tight, which is just crazy. But yes: Your Body, Your Science Experiment.

And sometimes that experiment doesn't work so hot. =D

Well, it WORKED. It just SUCKED. (I say this, of course, not being in your body and so extending lots of sympathy.) Here's hoping that agreeable equilibrium is achieved again soon.

Next up, you can write the book "Science Experiment, Like Me," where you live with other science experiments, in their environment. Man, I loved Eddie Murphy's "White Like Me" skit.

Still, I am sad for you. I love carbs. I love fried foods. I can't countenance living without either one, but I'm happy you'll be in better shape for avoiding them, from here on out.

Yay for clear communication from the body!
boo for pain and nausea!

I'm thinking that deep-fat fried anything is not a huge loss, that stuff has made me *urff* for years.

*sniff*

I suppose.

Looks longingly at the pakoras and samosas on the India Palace buffet

[identity profile] adammaker.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I had not thought of that. *damn*

Have you googled baked samosas?

I have made baked samosas with a shell of potato flour before!

Ooo. Thanks for the link!

So sorry this is the case, but so very glad you were able to finally pinpoint the problem.

Here's hoping you can now keep things under control going forward.

Well, I don't know about the problem, but most definitely a problem.

What with no soda and no wheat, my faire eating is going to change mightily this year.

[identity profile] rougewench.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. Wheat Thins off the nibbly tray, as we had them more for you than anyone...

Oh wow! What a horrid way to discover the allergy, too! *sympathy*

You will soon learn the gluten-free aisle at health food stores very well! It's a pain in the neck, but there are many alternatives that are gf, and even restaurants that have a gf section on their menu! (Our favorite Chinese restaurant, Fortune Wok at 135th and Nieman in Overland Park has a GF menu!)

Oh that so sucks and I'm sorry!
