My intolerance for junk food continues to increase.
Sunday I couldn't find the peppermint tea mix I'd prepped, so I was caffeine-less during the day. A bit before noon, necessity dictated a breach of resolution and I popped open a Diet Coke. Disgusting. It took me over half an hour to choke the whole thing down and I opted to go without stimulants for the rest of the day rather than suffer through that again.
Soda ban = Successful. I don't have to worry about succumbing to that particular temptation anymore. *shudder*
Monday night I got home from faire, exhausted and famished. I looked around the kitchen to see what I could immediately jam into my face to tide me over while I cleaned up. There was a bag of Spicy Sweet BBQ Doritos left over from
amjhawk's visit, so I grabbed a handful and went to turn on the shower. About six or eight chips in, my stomach started to hurt and it didn't stop aching until after I went to sleep. I followed the chips up with a peach and a protein shake, but they weren't enough to absorb the unhealthy ick or alleviate my body's reaction to it.
So. No more Doritos for me. Sorry,
cedarsong. =(
This letter from the chancellor went out yesterday. I edited it down to the highlights.
Dear Colleagues:
As you all know, the United States is currently experiencing an economic downturn. While the Kansas economy has benefited from high commodity prices and has not been hit as hard by declining home prices, budget forecasters in Topeka remain concerned about the revenue outlook for state government.
For the University of Kansas, a 2 percent reduction in the current fiscal year amounts to $5.58 million. For next year, the reduction would be $19.46 million. In addition to these reductions all campuses are experiencing ever-increasing energy costs.
Governor Kathleen Sebelius understands the value of higher education.
She has expressed her strong desire that universities be protected and that any reductions, should they be required, avoid affecting key instructional programs. We will, of course, do everything in our power to avoid such an impact by focusing cuts on administrative areas wherever possible. We will also seek to avoid harming research endeavors, since they result in a 3-to-1 return on the state's investment.
The current budget situation encourages us to find ways to focus on becoming more efficient. KU has already seen significant savings through a variety of innovative measures, ranging from a new computer contract that has saved us $172,000 so far to our efforts to increase energy efficiency. If you have suggestions on ways to be more efficient, I strongly encourage you to send them to me at kuchancellor@ku.edu. Some of our most innovative actions have resulted from the thoughtful observations of faculty, staff and students. Any suggestion will be carefully considered, I promise.
Sincerely,
Bob Hemenway
Chancellor
So if you have any ideas on how to cut costs at KU, send 'em Bob's way. It might save my job, or
everflame's.
I love the design of these mugs from the overly-commercialized-yoga Acacia company. The spoon rest in the handle is such a fantastic idea. But I would rather poke my eyes out with that spoon than have to read those platitudes with my morning coffee. There's having a positive outlook on life, and then there's just really goddamned annoying.

I guess it's no more Doritos for me. Unless I can find a new snack buddy.
Actually, it's probably better this way. I used to only indulge once or twice a year. This is much healthier!

I'm right with you on the soda...
Still like Water Joe when I can find it.

I'm hoping that they realize how key the two of you are, and that if any cuts occur, it shan't be you two.

It is easier to brew really caff-strong tea or coffee if you have caffeinated water on hand.
umm, not that I would do such a thing, right?

Speaking of which, I'm running out of vices...

I think I could handle "Today will be a good day" because of how ironic it could be.

Want I should come down and see you? I gotta get my allergy medicine, anyway.
...or is it still raining?

Tell the Chancellor to only buy computers with Ubuntu Linux running on them for the next two years, convert all existing systems to Linux, and convert all databases used on campus to MySQL.
If the experience I had doing so with a Canadian public school system was any indications, savings will be in the millions.

Prof, what was the cost to re-train the IT staff (of course, you might not have been part of that)? Keep in mind that with the current financial issues, KU won't hire new staff, and most current university IT staff are minimum-wage college students doing this for a few bucks and who don't really understand computers....

Check your voice mail at your office, sir. This is a fairly detailed conversation.
