All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS. To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222 . It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.
OR go to: http://www.donotcall.gov NOTE: As solan_t pointed out, cell phone users don't actually need to do this. But if you're like me and your cell number is a previous land line, it certainly can't hurt to register.

Last time I saw that warning about cell phone numbers and telemarketers, there as also a Snopes link debunking it. Not that I have any Snopes savve to look it up myself

I signed up for the Do Not Call registry five years ago when I first got my cell phone. You have to re-register every five years. I don't believe it's a scam.

The Do Not Call list is real, I am questioning whether or not the cell phone numbers are 'being released'. The wording up there is exactly the same as it was a couple years ago, when I aslo saw the Snopes debunk. As I recall, it was (and, is) illegal for telemarketers to call cell phone numbers, precisely BECAUSE the owner of the call has to pay for it.

Many people (like me) have phone numbers that used to be land lines. I didn't want to give up my old 749- prefix (a sort of townie pride thing) and I'd had that phone number for nearly ten years. Changing my phone number just because I was giving up my land line would've sucked.

Also, I don't trust telemarketing companies to obey the rules they're "supposed" to follow. I figure if I'm registered and they call, I have better backing to file a complaint.

An interesting point at the end of the link I posted (that I did not know) is that a listing on the Do Not Call list is no longer set to expire 5 years after listing. Hooray!


It also looks like you should have the law on your side if a telemarketer auto-dials your cell phone, regardless of the Do Not Call list.

My issue with it still holds, though. As someone who uses a former land-line number, I'd rather be safe than sorry. What really pisses me off: Political party calls are exempt from the Do Not Call rules. Grrrrrrr.

I just leave my phone off during the day and I rarely answer a call from a number I don't recognize. So most of this is moot, I know.
